The recent addition of Vanguard, an anti-cheat system, in patch 14.9 of League of Legends has sparked complaints from players who believe it is causing significant problems with their computers. A representative from Riot Games has addressed these concerns, stating that the issues are not related to Vanguard.
Vanguard is a kernel-level anti-cheat program developed by Riot, which played a significant role in the launch of their game Valorant. While it shares similarities with anti-cheat systems used in other popular multiplayer games, some players have expressed concerns about its access to personal computer data, leading to accusations of spyware.
Riot has previously denied these accusations and eventually implemented the anti-cheat for League of Legends in patch 14.9 on May 1 after a delay. Since the release, numerous players have taken to social media and Reddit to report that the anti-cheat is causing their computers to malfunction or interfere with their internal systems.
One of the most well-known creators in the League community, Nick ‘LS’ De Cesare, stated that the recent update caused his two computers to malfunction and cautioned players to be wary of the Vanguard update.

He subsequently shared a post, detailing the resolution of one of his computers, while also mentioning that the other was still malfunctioning.
Despite not releasing an official statement, Riot’s senior anti-cheat analyst Matt ‘K30’ Paoletti has denied claims on Reddit that the recent surge of technical problems with the patch is a result of Vanguard’s implementation.
The speaker addressed a player who reported that their laptop would not turn on after the update and clarified that the issue was not associated with Vanguard. They suggested that the problem could potentially be caused by an outdated CMOS battery, which is responsible for powering the start-up process.
According to a League of Legends streamer, screenshots show that moderators of the game’s subreddit are deleting comments related to the thread about Vanguard and K30’s arguments with players.
Riot is denying that Vanguard is bricking people’s PCs, and any kind of Vanguard discussion is banned from the sub. It’s tampering with unrelated files, preventing startup programs from booting, causing other programs to crash, etc.All this was known and they still launched. https://t.co/cTWWmPioIh pic.twitter.com/PO6NW6kpGJ

Vangaurd has been the anti-cheat system for Valorant since its release, and players have not encountered any problems like those being reported with its current implementation in League.
