Famous for her role in tvN’s hit drama “Queen of Tears”, actress Lee Joo-bin reflected on her 16-year-long acting journey since her debut. She first entered the entertainment industry in 2008, starring in SS501’s music video for “A Song Calling For You”. Although she was initially chosen as a member of the girl group Rainbow, she ultimately left the group before their debut.
After realizing that she did not have the talent to be an idol, Lee Joo-bin decided to leave the company and pursue higher education. She had always wanted to act and saw being an idol as a way to achieve her dream. Despite facing numerous rejections during her 10 years of auditioning, she held onto her belief that she could succeed if given the opportunity. She refused to give up and eventually gained recognition for her acting skills.
Despite working part-time as a model, Lee Joo-bin managed to complete her studies. However, she did not make her acting debut until the age of 27. Her first role was in the 2017 drama “Whisper,”and since then, she has appeared in various projects such as “Be Melodramatic”(2019) and “She Would Never Know”(2021). However, it was her role in the upcoming 2022 drama “Money Heist Korea”that caught the attention of tvN and led to her being cast in “Queen of Tears.”In this drama, she portrays the role of Cheon Da-hye, a deceitful daughter-in-law, which has allowed her to break away from
The actress revealed that playing a deceitful character was a new experience for her. Although she didn’t expect her character Da-hye to receive so much hate, she could still empathize with her and understand her perspective. However, upon watching the drama, she came to the realization that Da-hye was simply portrayed as a bad person (laughs).
In her role as a mother in “Queen of Tears”, Lee Joo-bin faced a new acting challenge. She admitted, “Playing opposite Kwak Dong-yeon as my husband, I often felt conflicted and guilty for having to deceive him. It was also surprising to see how quickly the baby (Geonwoo) grew. I found myself constantly holding and soothing him until he eventually fell asleep.”
After starring in this drama, the actress revealed that it was the first time she had used her own money to purchase luxury clothes. Lee Joo-bin explained, “In order to maintain the audience’s trust in Dahye’s character, I decided to put a lot of effort into her styling. I even bought expensive clothes, pretending to be a wealthy chaebol daughter-in-law. While I did receive some sponsored clothing, I also made personal purchases.”
Furthermore, Lee Joo-bin’s presence is not limited to just the drama “Queen of Tears”. She has also made her mark on the big screen with the recent release of her film “The Roundup: Punishment”on April 24th. Recalling her experience on set, she shared, “Working alongside actor Ma Dong-seok was challenging, but he constantly motivated me to act comfortably. Thanks to his support, I was able to complete the shoots with ease and even received compliments from him after watching the final edited version.”
In the drama, Lee Joo-bin is portrayed as the complete opposite of Cheon Da-hye. Despite relying on public transportation for a prolonged period, she was able to obtain a car last year. Furthermore, she has been offered numerous opportunities to appear on entertainment shows. The actress expressed, “If given the chance to fully immerse myself, I am confident that I can excel in any role,”and went on to say, “Having played several characters that emphasized appearance, I am eager to take on roles of an average person or an office worker.”
