Support for Sirinya: A Generous Donation by Lee Young Ae

On November 14, Chonnam National University (CNU) made headlines as actress Lee Young Ae contributed ₩10 million (approximately $7, 500 USD) to assist in the medical treatment and repatriation of Sirinya, a Thai student who has been in a coma due to a severe brain hemorrhage.

The Situation with Sirinya

Sirinya was pursuing her studies in Korean at CNU’s Language Education Institute when she was discovered unconscious in her dormitory back in July. After being diagnosed with subdural hemorrhage, she has remained under intensive care for over three months, fighting to regain consciousness.

Rallying Community Support

Upon learning about the financial strains faced by Sirinya’s family regarding hospital and transportation costs, CNU’s volunteer group, Rhythm of Hope, initiated a fundraising campaign. Originally aiming to raise ₩9 million, the campaign saw an outpouring of support from fellow students, faculty, and local residents, ultimately surpassing the initial target.

Lee Young Ae’s Heartfelt Contribution

Clearly moved by the circumstances, Lee Young Ae decided to make a significant personal donation of ₩10 million. In her message to the students involved, she expressed her gratitude:

Plans for Repatriation

As Sirinya remains reliant on medical equipment in her state of unconsciousness, preparations are underway for her transport back to Thailand.Korean Air has generously arranged five seats on an upcoming flight to accommodate her necessary medical devices and oxygen support, committing to ensure a smooth evacuation process.

Sirinya’s repatriation is scheduled for November 15, with a flight departing from Incheon International Airport at 7 PM.

Continued Support from CNU and Community

CNU has been dedicated to supporting Sirinya’s family by offering accommodation and interpretation services. Meanwhile, members of Rhythm of Hope are actively providing assistance throughout the repatriation process.
