Legal Expert Discusses Kim Soo-hyun’s Potential Penalty from Disney+
On March 28, legal expert Kim Kwang-sam made an appearance on YTN News NOW to address growing concerns surrounding actor Kim Soo-hyun, particularly related to the production troubles of “Knock-Off.”Rumors have surfaced alleging that Disney+ might levy a financial penalty exceeding 100 billion won against Kim Soo-hyun due to complications arising during the film’s production.
Kim Kwang-sam clarified, “Typically, entertainment contracts encompass production costs, with ‘Knock-Off’ having a reported budget of roughly 60 billion won. In such scenarios, penalty fees can range between two to three times the production cost.” However, he expressed skepticism about the feasibility of Disney+ imposing such a steep penalty in this case.

“When penalties skyrocket to unreasonable figures, it’s not always appropriate to rely on a straightforward multiplier of production costs, ” he explained. According to Kim, should Kim Soo-hyun be burdened with an outsized penalty, it risks creating a scenario benefiting the production company rather than serving justice in the breach of contract.“Even if taken to court, I believe that an excessively high penalty would be hard to validate—though it is likely that Kim Soo-hyun will still face significant financial repercussions, ” he noted.
K-Pop Star’s Image Takes a Hit Amid Controversy

The conversation then shifted to the actor’s image, which has recently suffered considerable damage due to ongoing rumors. Kim Kwang-sam remarked, “Kim Soo-hyun’s reputation has undoubtedly taken a serious hit. The discourse surrounding the matter has devolved into a ‘truth game, ’ with significant controversy stemming from his previous relationship with Kim Sae-ron.” He pointed out inconsistencies in Kim Soo-hyun’s statements, noting that while initial denials of their relationship were issued, later claims suggested they began dating only after Kim Sae-ron reached adulthood. Current revelations, however, indicate that their relationship may have started when she was still a minor.
It is essential to note that dating a minor is not criminal in itself under existing laws, meaning Kim Soo-hyun may not face legal challenges merely based on their relationship. Nonetheless, given the evidence that they were involved while Kim Sae-ron was aged 16 or 17, Kim has limited options but to acknowledge their relationship.

Kim Kwang-sam additionally criticized both Kim Soo-hyun and his agency for their inadequate handling of the situation.“Had he been upfront about their relationship from the beginning, clarified its mutual nature, and elaborated on when they ceased communication, the issue might not have escalated as it has, ” he stated. Both parties appear to have made missteps in their responses, leading to increased public scrutiny.
He concluded with a poignant reminder: “Once someone tells a lie, it tends to cast doubt on everything else they claim. In light of this, Kim Soo-hyun’s management of the situation has been far from effective.”

The controversy reignited when Kim Sae-ron posted couple photos prior to her passing, leading to initial claims from Kim Soo-hyun’s camp that they were unaware of her intentions. However, as concerns surrounding alleged grooming escalated, Kim’s narrative shifted to assert they dated only after her 18th birthday. On March 27, Kim Sae-ron’s family publicly disclosed KakaoTalk messages from 2016, when she was just 16, implying they had indeed been in contact during that period. To date, Kim Soo-hyun has not publicly addressed these claims.
