LinusTechTips has recently voiced concerns regarding YouTube’s collaboration feature, which has been the source of frustration among users due to the emergence of unwanted videos in their subscription feeds. This issue came to light as viewers expressed their dissatisfaction after discovering a podcast episode unexpectedly appearing in their feeds via YouTube’s collab system.
This collaborative feature allows a video uploaded by one creator to be showcased in the subscriber feeds of another partnered channel, potentially reaching audiences that are not following the original content creator. Many viewers reported feelings of confusion and irritation upon seeing these unexpected additions to their subscriptions.
Concerns Over Blocked Creators
Viewers raised significant concerns, especially regarding blocked creators. Linus highlighted a particularly critical comment from a viewer who expressed strong dislike for the collab feature. They argued that it pushes unwanted content into their feeds from channels they deliberately chose not to follow. The viewer specifically mentioned instances with prominent creators and pointed out that despite blocking certain channels, content from these creators continued to surface due to collaborations.
This raises an essential question: Should subscribers have to see content from channels they’ve blocked? Many argue that the answer is a definite no, feeling that YouTube’s current practices undermine user preferences and control over their viewing experience.
Linus resonated with this sentiment, acknowledging that the viewer’s call for greater control over their feed was entirely justified. He underscored the importance of allowing users to filter out collaborations or effectively block specific channels, reinforcing the idea that viewer preferences should be strictly respected.
Throughout this discussion, Linus elaborated on the limited ability creators have to promote their videos manually. He pointed out that, under the current algorithm, community posts often go unnoticed unless the content garners immediate engagement. The collab feature, in this context, serves as a small remedy, offering creators a chance to reach new audiences that the algorithm has been increasingly restricting.
Concluding his remarks, Linus reiterated the necessity for viewers to have ultimate control over their feeds. He called upon YouTube to reevaluate its systems, ensuring they honor users’ blocks and subscription preferences effectively. In a previous discussion in October, he had also urged YouTube to address issues with their membership feature, labeling the platform as “un-navigable” for users.
