MAPPA’s Yuri!! on Ice anime film gets canceled

Despite the highly anticipated release of the Yuri!! on Ice anime film, Ice Adolescence, the film’s production committee and animation studio, MAPPA, announced on Friday, April 19, 2024, that the movie has been canceled. The decision was made due to unspecified “various circumstances.”

The announcement of the production of the film was made in April 2017, which was a significant event. It was meant to be the first feature film of the popular ice-skating anime series. Although there were production challenges that caused delays, fans remained optimistic that the movie would eventually be completed and released. Unfortunately, the recent update from the production team has shattered all hopes and expectations of the fans.

Yuri!! on Ice anime film cancellation due to various circumstances

The cancellation of the movie Yuri!! on Ice: Ice Adolescence was announced on both the official website and X handle for the anime film Yuri!! on Ice. The announcement stated that production for the movie has been halted due to “various circumstances.”

Despite not providing specific reasons for the cancellation, the staff has sincerely apologized to all the fans eagerly awaiting the release of the film. Additionally, they have reassured fans that they were in constant communication with the production committee throughout the process of creating and delivering the film.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances, the production of the film had to be halted. It is worth mentioning that the announcement for the Yuri!! on Ice anime film was made in April 2017, after the 12-episode TV anime series concluded on December 22, 2016. Crunchyroll streamed the television series with English subtitles as it aired.

The audience had high expectations for the movie, as it was set to depict the next stage of Yuri Katsuki and Victor Nikiforov’s dynamic relationship and their ongoing journey in the world of ice-skating.

Despite the initial plans to release the Yuri!! on Ice anime film in 2019, the official staff announced a delay in order to add more content than originally intended.

Despite this, a tentative release date was still not able to be revealed at that time.

Despite the anticipation of fans, there have been no updates on the premiere of the Yuri!! on Ice anime film. Despite the eager waiting, neither the staff nor the production studio have given the green light for the movie’s release. As a result, it is regrettable that the production of the movie has been put on hold.

Significantly, the film showcased the same team of staff members who had worked on the previous TV anime series. Mitsurou Kubo and Sayo Yamamoto had jointly developed the initial idea for the movie at MAPPA Studios. In addition to the concept, Sayo-san took on the roles of director and writer.

Mitsurou-san was not only responsible for the screenplay and the original character designs, but also collaborated with Taro Umebayashi and Taku Matsushiba on the film’s music. Additionally, Keisuke Tominaga served as the music producer, with Kenji Miyamoto credited as the figure skating choreographer.

The “shortcut”employed by the president of MAPPA is to blame for the poor conditions of their animators.
