In the world of action RPGs, mastering the art of blocking and parrying is crucial, and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is no exception. However, players might find that the game does not immediately provide guidance on these techniques.
Much like Black Myth: Wukong, the combat mechanics in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers are characterized by their swiftness and depend heavily on precise footwork rather than sheer force. While dodging plays a significant role in avoiding attacks, it’s often insufficient, particularly against adversaries wielding formidable melee weapons.
This is where blocking and parrying—also referred to as deflecting—become invaluable, enabling you to absorb damage and counterattack effectively. If you’re a newcomer struggling with how to unlock and perform these moves, this guide is here to assist you.
How to Block in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
In order to block an incoming attack, you must equip a weapon that possesses a blocking Discipline. Once equipped, the action is straightforward: press R2, RT, or Shift + Right Click just before an enemy strikes to significantly reduce the damage you take.

Unlike traditional action RPGs, there is no universal block button available at all times. Instead, players must customize their character build to include this capability. Some weapons you encounter will naturally come with this Discipline, while others require exploration within the skill tree to unlock.
For instance, the Vermillion War Club Axe, encountered early in the game, inherently possesses blocking abilities, whereas the Lashing Whip Longsword necessitates unlocking the Sword Counter in the Impetus Repository to access its blocking feature. Once unlocked, this capability can be applied to any Longsword you acquire, provided the Discipline is active.
It is essential to note that choosing a block ability may require forgoing a more aggressive Discipline, so weigh your options carefully. Sometimes, opting for a defensive Weapon Skill may be advantageous, particularly if it allows you to deal damage effectively.
How to Deflect in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
Deflecting, or parrying, is accomplished by executing a block momentarily before an enemy’s attack connects, thus negating all damage. However, be aware of a few important limitations.
Notably, deflecting is only effective against enemies armed with weapons; it will not protect you from physical strikes or spells. Consequently, if faced with a giant bug using its claws, you will unfortunately be at a disadvantage.
Moreover, not every weapon allows for automatic deflection. With Longswords, deflection can only be utilized after the Sword Counter ability is attained. In contrast, Axes, Spears, and One-Handed Swords do not offer this option.

Understanding Clash Mechanics
Clash mechanics function similarly to deflecting in that they can nullify an enemy’s damage, but they are activated through an offensive maneuver rather than a defensive one. To execute a clash, timing is critical; your attack must land simultaneously with your opponent’s.
Perfecting this technique might be challenging, especially with attacks that involve a prolonged animation, but once mastered, it offers a highly effective defensive strategy. Although clashes may not suit every player’s style, they can provide greater protection for more aggressive weapon classes, such as the Spear.
Do keep in mind that, akin to parrying, clashes are only viable against foes equipped with weapons.
