A unique artifact from the late Michael Jackson’s illustrious career recently made headlines, as a single rhinestone-studded sock worn during a 1997 concert in France fetched an astonishing price at auction. Despite its aged condition—including visible stains and yellowing—the sock captivated bidders and sold for a remarkable amount.
This particular sock was donned during Jackson’s renowned HIStory World Tour. A technician stumbled upon it after the performance in Nîmes, located in southern France, where it had been carelessly discarded near the icon’s dressing room. The technician preserved the sock by framing it alongside his backstage pass, adding a touch of authenticity to the memorabilia.
Although the off-white sock bears the marks of time and its once-sparkling rhinestones have lost their luster, this did not deter auction participants from driving the price significantly higher than the initial estimation of $3, 400 to $4, 500, as noted by French auctioneer Aurore Illy.
MJ’s Sock Fetches $8, 822 at Auction
The final sale price reached an impressive $8, 822 at the Nîmes auction house, far exceeding initial expectations.“It really is an exceptional object — even a cult one for Michael Jackson fans, ” Illy remarked, emphasizing the cultural significance of the item.

This sock’s allure is further enhanced by Jackson’s iconic performance style, especially during his famous rendition of “Billie Jean, ”where he is remembered for his glittery white socks. Notably, this isn’t an isolated incident; Jackson memorabilia consistently commands significant prices at auction. For instance, in 2009, a glove worn during his first moonwalk in 1983 was sold for a staggering $350, 000 to a Macau gaming resort.
Interestingly, the condition of the sock and its possible odors remain a mystery. One can only speculate whether wearing it might bestow the new owner with the legendary ability to moonwalk just like the King of Pop himself.
