Enhancements to Windows 11 File Explorer Dark Mode
- Microsoft is rolling out fixes for the Windows 11 File Explorer dark mode, updating crucial dialog boxes for copying, deleting, and administrative tasks to align with the dark theme.
- Color discrepancies on the “This PC” section have been addressed, hinting at further enhancements coming soon; however, several legacy tools remain lacking in dark mode compatibility.
For nearly a decade, Microsoft has underutilized the potential of dark mode in Windows 11’s File Explorer. Users have long requested a seamless, system-wide dark theme, but the company has only issued incremental updates, leading to a fragmented and incomplete experience.
Recent Developments in Dark Mode
Fortunately, there may be a shift on the horizon. The latest preview build, Windows 11 25H2, showcases emerging dark-themed components within File Explorer.
Notably, developer @PhantomOfEarth has identified enhancements in build 26200.5751 in the Dev Channel. This version updates several dialogs, including the file copy interface, to closely follow the dark mode color palette, mitigating the previous contrast issues that disrupted the user experience.

Additionally, improvements have been made to the confirmation dialog for file deletions and the administrative prompt, contributing to a more cohesive dark mode experience within File Explorer.
Although Microsoft has not officially announced these adjustments, it has acknowledged the correction of another issue involving the low disk space warning on the “This PC” page, which previously ignored the dark mode setting and displayed in glaring red. These updates indicate a concerted effort from Microsoft to refine the dark theme experience for both File Explorer and the overall operating system.

Ongoing Challenges with Legacy Tools
Despite these advancements, many system components remain unaffected. Crucially, legacy tools such as the Registry Editor, Group Policy Editor, and Computer Management still lack proper dark mode support. This ongoing delay has contributed to a perception among users that dark mode development may have stagnated.

Looking ahead, many users, including myself, hope it won’t take another decade for a fully functional dark mode to become a reality across all aspects of Windows 11.

Desiring Intelligent Theme Switching
Alongside improvements to dark mode, I have longed for a feature that allows the operating system to switch between light and dark themes automatically based on the time of day without relying on third-party solutions.
Platforms like macOS not only provide an effective dark mode but also feature options for time-based theme switching, enhancing user comfort and accessibility.
What color mode do you prefer on your computer—light or dark? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
