Could a sequel to Minecraft, often dubbed Minecraft 2, be on the horizon? Here’s the latest information regarding the potential follow-up to the world’s best-selling video game, originally conceived by Markus “Notch”Persson.
Minecraft has undeniably left a significant mark on the gaming industry since its launch in 2009. With its ongoing updates and the forthcoming live-action film set to premiere in April 2025, the franchise continues to thrive and evolve as a cultural phenomenon.
Despite its massive popularity, there has yet to be an official sequel to Minecraft. Instead, the game’s developers have focused on enhancing the original title, frequently releasing new content and features to keep the player base engaged. Though fans have expressed a strong desire for a sequel over the last ten years, interest in Minecraft 2 has surged recently.
Notch’s New Direction: A “Spiritual Successor”
Although Notch is no longer in charge of the Minecraft franchise following its acquisition by Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014, he has remained a prominent figure in discussions surrounding the game. Since then, Mojang Studios has taken the lead in developing innovative updates and introducing spin-offs such as Minecraft Dungeons and Legends.
The conversation about a potential Minecraft 2 gained traction after Notch conducted a poll on X (formerly Twitter) on January 1, 2025. In this poll, he sought feedback on whether he should focus on developing a dungeon crawler project or pursue a “spiritual successor” to Minecraft.
Honest and legitimate request for feedback for once:The new game I’m passionately working on is currently set to be a traditional roguelike (i.e. ADOM, nethack, etc) mixed with a tile based first person dungeon crawler (ie Legend of Grimrock (esp 2), Eye of the Beholder)But…

The poll quickly garnered significant attention, with nearly 300,000 users participating. Remarkably, 81% voted in favor of Notch shifting gears to focus on “making Minecraft 2.”
Legal Boundaries and Future Projects
When questioned about the feasibility of creating a sequel given he no longer possesses the rights, Notch candidly stated that developing a direct sequel would be “super illegal.” Instead, he expressed interest in crafting “a new original game of the same type as Minecraft” while respecting the established brand.
No, it would be super illegal.Instead I’d make a new original game of the same type as minecraft and call it something else. These are traditionally sometimes referred to as “spiritual successors”, but usually kinda mostly feel a bit flat. But, like, if that’s actually what…

Describing such projects as “spiritual successors,” he noted they often don’t live up to the original’s brilliance. Nevertheless, he reaffirmed his enthusiasm for creating a game that resonates with players, referring to it as potentially his “Gremlins 2.”
In a now-deleted follow-up tweet, Notch clarified his intentions to ensure that his new project would not infringe upon the work being done by Microsoft and Mojang. He commended the development team for evolving Minecraft over the past decade, emphasizing his respect for their contributions.
“I very much value being a man of my word,” he said. “I also intend to do this in a way that does not interfere with the incredible work the Mojang team is doing.”
As it stands, Mojang has yet to publicly comment on Notch’s recent declarations regarding a possible sequel or confirm whether they have their own plans in development. With Notch’s intentions laid bare, the gaming community is left wondering when further details regarding this intriguing “spiritual successor” may emerge.
