In the expansive world of Minecraft, the compass is a pivotal tool that guides players back to their spawn point, making it essential for survival during lengthy journeys. Now, an inventive creator has brought the essence of this virtual tool into the real world.
Meet chaosgoo, a talented innovator who has crafted a real-life version of the iconic Minecraft compass. This stunning replica not only resembles the in-game model but functions similarly as well. Unlike its virtual counterpart that leads you home, this physical compass can be programmed to point to any desired real-world destination, such as your home, which can be viewed as your personal ‘spawn point.’
Innovative Technology Behind the Real Minecraft Compass
To achieve this fascinating creation, chaosgoo engineered a custom PCB (Printed Circuit Board) to facilitate functionality, supported by professional coding expertise. The centerpiece of this board is the ESP32-C3-MINI microcontroller, recognized for its integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. Additionally, the setup incorporates a USB connector, a lithium battery charger, and a digital compass sensor that determines the device’s orientation.

The visual appeal of the compass is heightened by a ring composed of 42 individually addressable RGB LEDs, which echo the popular WS2812b lights, albeit utilizing the TX1812IJA-F01 model. To enhance the aesthetic, chaosgoo employed PET LGT075J material as a diffuser, creating a smooth, radiant glow that mimics the game’s design, rather than simply resembling a cluster of lights.
Furthermore, the structure of the compass is designed with accessibility in mind. The base of the compass is entirely 3D-printable, enabling anyone with access to a 3D printer to replicate the housing. After assembly, users can leverage a companion app to establish their target location. The compass needle will then unwaveringly direct them toward their destination, be it their home, an iconic landmark, or any location they choose.
This remarkable project stands as a true tribute to one of Minecraft’s most recognizable items, as it transforms a beloved in-game element into a functional navigation device in the real world.
