Miu Miu Faces Criticism from Chinese Netizens Over New Lingerie Collection – Is IVE’s Jang Wonyoung to Blame?

Miu Miu’s new lingerie line has received unexpected criticism from Chinese netizens on their recent Instagram posts. Many of these comments are directed towards the fashion brand for their continued collaboration with Jang Wonyoung from IVE, and accuse them of disrespecting their country through their choice of words.

In late April, IVE made their official comeback with “HEYA”after a hiatus of over 6 months. However, the group’s comeback was met with criticism from some Chinese netizens due to controversies surrounding the costumes in their MV.

The main concept of the “HEYA”MV was inspired by Eastern goddesses and featured traditional and distinctive elements. However, upon its release, IVE faced accusations of promoting Korean traditional culture by appropriating elements from Chinese culture. This sparked a strong backlash from Chinese netizens.

Many Chinese netizens believed that the props used in the MV, such as gombangdae smoking pipes, landscape paintings, coin patterns, embroidered flower shoes, and three-stick fans, represented and originated from their own culture.

Additionally, as Jang Wonyoung is currently serving as Miu Miu’s global ambassador, the brand has also garnered negative attention from Chinese netizens. Being a top 4th generation idol with a large fan following, a significant portion of the criticism is aimed towards Jang Wonyoung.

Despite not directly addressing these accusations, many believe that Starship, the company of IVE, is more likely to have been influenced by cultural similarities between East Asian countries rather than intentionally plagiarizing.
