Modder Successfully Uses Game Boy as Switch Controller Thanks to Ingenious Hack

A modder has developed a GBA cartridge that enables users to convert their outdated Game Boy Advance into a functional Nintendo Switch controller.

There is a wide variety of Switch controllers available, ranging from larger models to nostalgic classics. Recently, a modder has devised a method for using the original Game Boy Advance as a controller for the Nintendo Switch.

InsideGadgets’ modder has recently posted a video on their YouTube channel featuring a Game Boy Advance being utilized to play Nintendo Switch. The video displays their use of the GBA to play Super Mario Wonder instead of using the Switch Lite.

Thanks to a custom GBA cartridge called the ‘GBA Bluetooth TX cart’, insideGadgets was able to utilize the Game Boy Advance as a controller for the Switch. This was first reported by Time Extension and the cartridge closely resembles a regular GBA cartridge. Its unique functionality allows for wireless controller usage on the Switch or any device with Zero 2 support, rather than running a game like a traditional cartridge would.

The GBA Bluetooth TX cart functions in a comparable manner to an 8BitDo Zero 2 controller and is compatible with a Switch, PC, Raspberry Pi, and Android. Additionally, the cart allows for the remapping of GBA buttons according to personal preferences through the provided options.

The Nintendo Switch Online service now offers a variety of Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games, making it possible to experience the original hardware’s button layout. While the budget-friendly 8BitDo Zero 2 controller is an option, the unique GBA cart comes at a higher cost.

The Bluetooth GBA cart, which is currently listed as ‘coming soon’ on the insideGadgets website, is priced at $89. This price is comparable to purchasing four 8BitDo Zero 2 controllers, each priced at $20. InsideGadgets has explained on their X/Twitter page that the cart’s high cost is a result of its intricate manufacturing process.

If you own multiple Game Boy Advance consoles or a Game Boy Micro, creating a personalized GBA cart could be an enjoyable weekend activity. To stay updated on the availability of the GBA Bluetooth TX cart, you can register for notifications on the insideGadgets website.
