Modder Transforms Toy Pokedex into Working Game Boy

Hairo Satoh, a Game Boy modder, has successfully turned the well-known Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Pokedex into a functioning handheld device for Nintendo.

The modding community is continuously keeping the classic Nintendo Game Boy, as well as all its variations, alive by adorning them with stunning custom shells. Additionally, they have enhanced the gaming experience with improved displays and upgraded speakers, adding to their overall quality.

This particular modder has been steadily gaining recognition for their impressive custom handheld creations. Their latest project involves transforming an official Pokemon Pokedex toy into a functional Game Boy Micro.

The self-proclaimed “Gameboy doctor”, Hairo Satoh, shared the custom Pokemon Pokedex on his personal Instagram account. On his account, viewers can admire the nostalgic beauty of the creation, as the decades-old Pokedex toy is opened to reveal a fully functioning Game Boy Micro.

The original sleek silver shell of the Game Boy Micro handheld, which was released in 2005, has been completely replaced. Satoh chose to use a toy version of the Pokedex from the Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen era, as seen in the Pokemon Battle Frontiers anime series. While many custom Game Boy modifications involve creating a new shell from scratch, Satoh decided to use the Hasbro ‘Talking Pokedex Game’ toy released in 2005 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Pokemon brand. This toy allowed fans to play a Pokemon game and catch and scan different Pokemon using the re-envisioned Kanto Pokedex.

Due to this, the Pokdex toy was already equipped with functional buttons. Furthermore, the addition of a D-pad is more than sufficient for playing Game Boy Micro games.

Despite not providing a specific description, Satoh’s modifications for the ‘Pokedex Boy Advance’ are evident from the brief footage. It is clear that the original big blue button has been replaced with a joystick and the custom GB Micro now includes added features such as an integrated GBA game cart slot, power button, volume dial, power light indicator, and a charging port.

Throughout its history, Nintendo has launched various official versions of its handheld consoles featuring Pokemon. The latest addition to this lineup is the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Nintendo Switch OLED, which was introduced in 2022 to align with the newest Pokemon generation.

However, despite this, none of the official Pokemon handhelds can compare to the experience of playing a Pokemon game on an actual, physical Pokemon Pokedex.
