YouTube creators are facing scrutiny following a series of “aggressive”monkey attacks on tourists within Cambodia’s Angkor Archaeological Park. Reports suggest that these attacks are exacerbated by the actions of content creators who allegedly provoke the animals.
Situated in Cambodia, Angkor Archaeological Park is home to some of the most breathtaking ruins from the Khmer Empire’s capital. This historical site is surrounded by dense forests which serve as a habitat for thousands of macaque monkeys, making it a popular destination for tourists and content creators alike.
This park, one of Cambodia’s premier tourist attractions, has seen an influx of visiting YouTubers keen to film engaging content. Unfortunately, some of these creators have reportedly mistreated the monkeys, contributing to behavioral changes in the primates. According to sources, the monkeys’ natural instincts have shifted from wild creatures to more domestic and aggressive animals that now engage in stealing food and, alarmingly, injuring visitors.
Concerns from Authorities Regarding Monkey Behavior
Local authorities express concerns that the shift in monkey behavior may lead to lasting harm to this historical site. Long Kosal, a spokesperson for the park, noted that “on top of biting visitors, they have been climbing up and pushing stones down, damaging temples.”Such actions pose not only safety risks but also threats to the integrity of the ancient structures.
In a proactive measure, the local agricultural ministry announced in early 2024 a plan aimed at cataloging the monkeys in the region. This initiative includes relocating those animals deemed dangerous to humans in a bid to restore safety for visitors and protect the park’s historical significance.
The impact of social media influencers on wildlife behavior has gained attention in recent years, with numerous monkey-related incidents making headlines. For instance, YouTube personality IShowSpeed had an eventful encounter during a stream in Bali, Indonesia, in September 2024. As he sat on a bench, he attracted the curiosity of nearby monkeys, one of which caused a stir by knocking off his wireless microphone. After a brief chase, Speed ultimately chose to abandon his efforts to retrieve the microphone as a monkey sprinted away with it.

Additionally, in November 2024, reports surfaced of 40 macaque monkeys escaping from a research facility in South Carolina, with the majority located soon after the incident.
As the popularity of social media and content creation continues to grow, it becomes increasingly important to consider the impact on wildlife. Balancing tourism and animal welfare is essential for maintaining both safety and the integrity of such valuable historical sites.
