Monsters: Eiichiro Oda breaks silence on One Piece prequel anime

The anime adaptation of Monsters is due in a few days, and here’s what its author Eiichiro Oda, also creator of One Piece, has to say about it.

One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda released a series of one-shots ahead of the manga’s official release about Luffy and his crew. These short stories were later compiled into the volume Wanted!, and one of them follows the legendary swordsman Ryuma Shimotsuki.

The character lived about 400 years before the story of the Straw Hats, and his legend is still popular in the country of Wano, when Luffy sets foot on the island of the samurai. The new anime which is about to be released, Monsters: The Inferno of the Flying Dragon with 103 Passions, will look at one of the adventures of this figure almost mythical.

Directed by Sunghoo Park, the anime adaptation is ready for its big premiere on January 21. The studio behind the anime, E&H Production, was established by director Park, known for his attention to detail after his work on Jujutsu Kaisen. And while everyone is waiting for Monsters: The Inferno of the Dragon of 103 Passions, it is the author Eiichiro Oda who spoke about the adaptation on social networks.

Eiichiro Oda discusses his enthusiasm for the Monsters anime

The 8th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump includes One Piece chapter 1104. And according to leaker PewPiece in a publication on X/Twitter, Eiichiro Oda would have taken the opportunity to comment: “I can’t believe that ‘MONSTERS ‘, the one-shot manga that I drew in my youth, is receiving an animated adaptation! THIS IS LIFE!!!”

The mangaka’s one-shots were published from 1992 to 1996, before the One Piece manga debuted in 1997. On One Piece Day 2023, the anime adaptation was announced with a teaser video, as well as some major announcements concerning Luffy’s Gear 5, or even information on the live-action adaptation of One Piece.

What is Monsters anime?

The Monsters anime is a canon story that follows the events that took place 400 years before the main story of One Piece, when Ryuma made history.

Mugiwara fans will finally discover the legend behind the story of Ryuma slaying a dragon. In volume 247 of the SBS, Eiichiro Oda already presented the protagonist thus: “Although being a zombie, the character appearing in chapter 450 is indeed Ryuma.”

“He is the samurai hero of the short story MONSTERS. However, in the world of One Piece, he is also a legendary warrior who died due to illness and etched his name in history.”

Monsters: The Inferno of the Dragon of 103 Passions will be available on January 21, 2024 on Netflix and ADN.
