Creature – Lhurgoyf

The Lhurgoyf Creature type has recently received significant support in MTG’s Modern Horizons 3 set, making a comeback after several years of being neglected.

Despite the Eldrazi being the clear focus of Modern Horizons 3’s main set, the Graveyard Overdrive Commander deck was dominated by Lhurgoyfs, showcasing both traditional Lhurgoyfs and introducing new additions for the archetype.

Just as with Eldrazi Kozilek, the inclusion of Subgoyf in MTG shows that the designers are still invested in revitalizing these archetypes, despite the release of Modern Horizons 3.

Just like other Lhurgoyfs, Subgoyf’s power is determined by the number of specific cards in the graveyard. However, what sets this card apart is that it becomes stronger with each different subtype present in the graveyard, such as Equipment, Auras, and more. This concept of subtypes being significant is a unique and uncharted territory in MTG design, and it may make a comeback in future premier sets if Subgoyf is well-received.

Spuzzem Strategist

As a nod to long-time MTG enthusiasts, Spuzzem Strategist capitalizes on a peculiar phrasing from Magic’s initial years.

The card Floral Spuzzem’s initial release featured the phrase ‘Floral Spuzzem may choose to’ instead of the anticipated ‘you may’. This sparked speculation among the community that Floral Spuzzem had its own agency and would act independently of its player’s strategy.

The Spuzzem Strategist serves as a humorous solution to the problematic language used for the Floral Spuzzem, offering players the opportunity to take control and tame these wild creatures after all these years.

Zone of Flame

An additional chip-damage choice that can be taken advantage of to inflict significant levels of burn damage to adversaries.

Despite the high mana value of 4RRR, strategic planning can allow this card to transform one player’s luck, whether good or bad, into a powerful strike against all players except yourself.

One way to use Zone of Flame to your advantage is by casting it to enchant the battlefield before overwhelming it with tokens, or by targeting an opponent’s graveyard before unleashing a devastating wrath effect. In these situations, Zone of Flame can become a major nuisance for your opponents.

Being an Enchantment, Zone of Flame requires your constant attention until it is permanently removed.

Plain Walker

A revival of MTG’s ‘walk’ ability, Plain Walker replaces basic effects like Swampwalk and Islandwalk with the intricately-named Planeswalkerwalk, adding a touch of humor.

In the past, different versions of the walk ability penalized players who used certain colors of mana. However, Plain Walker does not discriminate and takes issue with any players who dare to include Planeswalker cards in their decks, such as those led by Commander Masters’ Commodore Guff.

Additionally, Plain Walker incorporates the Planechase game mode, which will likely be well-received by those who purchased Universes Beyond: Doctor Who and were disappointed by the lack of ongoing support for Planechase.
