Mufasa from The Lion King Shares Ideal Concept for Timon and Pumbaa Spin-off

The release of Mufasa: The Lion King has sparked excitement among fans, but what could be coming next in this beloved franchise? Voice actor Billy Eichner, who portrays Timon, has a delightful concept for a spinoff featuring Timon and Pumbaa, alongside his longtime collaborator, Seth Rogen.

This latest movie acts both as a sequel and a prequel to the 2019 remake of The Lion King. While often referred to as “live-action,”the film utilizes photorealistic animation rather than real animals to tell the story.

In Mufasa, audiences reconnect with familiar characters such as Nala (voiced by Beyoncé), Simba (Donald Glover), and their daughter Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter). The narrative also delves into the backstory of Mufasa and his brother Taka, revealing the transformation of Taka into the notorious Scar.

Amidst the unfolding drama, Eichner’s Timon and Rogen’s Pumbaa inject humor into the storyline, providing comic relief that might not be the last we see of these iconic duo.

Eichner’s Vision for a Timon and Pumbaa Spinoff

When prompted about the possibility of a dedicated spinoff, Eichner shared, “Everyone’s asking about it. Seth and I are ready to go. We need people to make noise about a Timon and Pumbaa movie.”He humorously emphasized the importance of keeping the conversation alive.

Eichner ventured suggestions for the film’s direction, saying, “A prequel could be fun, or we could see them in the future.”He elaborated on this vision: “I envision a road trip adventure where they meet new characters while occasionally crossing paths with familiar ones. It could be a vibrant, comedic romp.”

“The Lion King has its intense and emotional moments, which are wonderful, but Timon and Pumbaa’s friendship offers an opportunity to explore their bond in a lighthearted way,”he noted. “We want something truly funny and fast-paced.”

In a lighthearted jab, Eichner added, “Perhaps we could include some new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, since he didn’t provide us with any in this movie, and both Seth and I are quite unhappy about that!”

Mufasa: The Lion King is currently showing in theaters. For those who are interested in spoilers, details about how the film alters Scar’s backstory and an explanation of its dedication to James Earl Jones are available for reading.
