The original Fallout game debuted in 1997 and distinguished itself from later entries in the series by offering a turn-based, isometric role-playing experience instead of the first-person shooter (FPS) style that fans have come to expect. However, the gameplay paradigm is now shifting, thanks to a groundbreaking mod.

For many gamers, the Fallout franchise is synonymous with action-packed FPS gameplay. Its unique blend of retro-futuristic aesthetics and a richly crafted open world mirrors elements of our reality, making it instantly recognizable. Yet, it is primarily the engaging gameplay that captivates players.

Introducing Fallout: Bakersfield – A Game-Changing FPS Transformation

In a significant update, modder and developer Alexander ‘Red888Guns’ Berezin has unveiled a mod that reimagines the classic Fallout title as a full-fledged FPS, now known as Fallout: Bakersfield. This mod, first teased in September 2022 to coincide with the franchise’s 25th anniversary, revamps the original game using the Doom engine. Importantly, players won’t need to purchase the original Fallout again, as this mod is compatible with ZDoom.

A new trailer has recently been released, providing an engaging preview of what players can expect: detailed environments, diverse enemies, and an arsenal of powerful weapons that pay homage to the original game while enhancing the FPS dynamic.

The visuals retain the nostalgic interface of the 1997 original, cleverly balancing modern improvements with familiar graphics to evoke the classic vibe, perfect for returning fans. You can watch the trailer here.

Throughout the trailer, viewers encounter various ghouls, experience the iconic Fallout soundtrack, and catch a glimpse of a range of formidable weapons. Among the arsenal is a throwing knife, allowing for some stealthy strategic gameplay. For fans, this mod can be likened to a thrilling merger between Doom and Fallout.

However, it’s essential to note that the development is still in progress, with only approximately 60% of the mod completed at this time. Therefore, its official release may still be a while off.

Interestingly, some astute fans have noted that the trailer occasionally hints at a potential release date of 2027. Coinciding with rumors surrounding the development of Fallout 5, this upcoming mod is one that the gaming community will want to keep an eye on.
