Kohei Horikoshi, the creator of My Hero Academia, recently shared how a beloved work by James Cameron influenced a significant choice in the backstory of One For All.
The My Hero Academia franchise will reach another significant milestone this summer as it celebrates a decade of serialization. On August 2, the highly anticipated fourth movie, My Hero Academia: You’re Next, will be released in Japan.
Ahead of the highly anticipated event, Horikoshi met with Viz to discuss the widespread popularity of his manga. During the conversation, he also disclosed the reasons for excluding certain stories from the series.
The author revealed that he has detailed backstories for every One For All user, but he chose not to include them in the main story. When discussing any potential plotlines he regrets not exploring, he mentioned this decision.
When inquired about his intentions to depict them in the future, he responded, “No, not at all. Instead of illustrating the meticulously crafted settings and events, I preferred to allude to them.”
Horikoshi also referenced Terminator 2: Judgment Day, a renowned sci-fi film, as a source of inspiration for his approach to storytelling. He emphasized the importance of not revealing everything to readers, allowing them to create their own interpretations.
According to him, in Terminator 2, John Connor takes on a leadership role in the future while Schwarzenegger’s character is sent from that same future world. However, there are limited portrayals of the future itself.
“The lack of detailed depiction of the future allows for the viewers’ imaginations to expand, which I found to be a great aspect. This inspired me to create something similar to Terminator 2.”
It is intriguing that the author chose not to disclose the previous One For All users’ backgrounds. We were given a glimpse into Nana Shimura’s past and Yoichi’s, which shed light on the origins of the transferable Quirk. However, the author chose not to reveal the full backstories of the previous users.
In addition to Kudo saving Yoichi from All For One before acquiring the Quirk, he eventually passed it on to his protégé Bruce. However, beyond these events, we have no information about their heroic journeys or how they came to possess One For All.
Despite Horikoshi’s statement, it can be argued that allowing for our own theories to develop is not necessarily a negative aspect. The past users possess captivating characteristics, making it effortless for fans to construct their own head-canons about them.
In addition to the upcoming release of My Hero Academia: You’re Next, the franchise has another significant event taking place that week. After a decade-long journey, the manga will conclude on August 5, 2024, with the release of Chapter 430.
Additionally, you can discover the desired love confession among fans and the reason for the delay of My Hero Academia Season 7 Episode 12.
