Netflix will play Werewolves with Franck Dubosc and Jean Reno

This is news that we didn’t necessarily expect: the famous French board game will be adapted for the streaming giant. More than 1000 extras, immense sets and a substantial budget, the next film aims to be ambitious.

Who has never played the Loups-Garous board game from Thiercelieux? Blend into the crowd of a carefree village, the better to devour its inhabitants one after the other at night and manipulate them during the day, when the time came to execute one in a public square?

A very favorable terrain for adaptations, the story being simple but particularly effective, its setting recalling the darkest hours of the big bad wolf and other beasts of Gévaudan. And allowing for an infinite number of variations – especially if we add characters with very specific powers like Cupid, the little girl or the Witch… And Netflix did not miss this opportunity!

Netflix presents its Werewolves film in a mysterious teaser

The teaser arrived on January 30 on the official Netflix France account on X/Twitter: yes, the French board game – but derived from the Russian Mafia game whose rules are almost the same – will be adapted into a film for Netflix: release planned in 2024!

François Uzan is at the helm, having notably written the script for the series Lupine. At the head of the bill, we find Jean Reno, Jonathan Lambert, Suzanne Clément and Franck Dubosc to perform in Czech settings. Because yes, the filming took place in the Czech Barrandov studios according to Le Parisien, which visited the location in 2023. The newspaper then reported 1,200 extras in a village setting straight out of the medieval ages. As for the budget, we know that it is substantial, but that stops there: it has not yet been given in detail.

If the board game has a very simple scenario – the village falls asleep, the wolves kill, the village wakes up, the villagers get confused for three days and kill – the film has decided on a slightly different approach for its story. So expect a touch of Jumanji in this Werewolves: our heroes are in fact a contemporary family having fun playing the eponymous game, before finding themselves catapulted into its universe.

Werewolves does not yet have a specific release date, but is expected in 2024 on Netflix.
