New ‘Bumpy Snailfish’ Discovered at 13,000 Feet Depth in the Ocean

A remarkable new species of deep-sea fish, identified as the bumpy snailfish (Careproctus colliculi), has been discovered off the coast of California. This finding was shared in a recent publication by researchers, who meticulously detailed the fish’s unique characteristics, including its large head, gelatinous body, and loose skin.

Unveiling the Bumpy Snailfish

Snailfish, categorized within the family Liparidae, are recognized for their unique body form and specialized adaptations that enable them to adhere to the seafloor or other larger marine organisms through a disk-like structure located on their underside. Currently, over 400 species of snailfish have been identified globally, with the bumpy snailfish among the latest contributions to this extensive family.

The bumpy snailfish was retrieved from depths exceeding 13, 500 feet near Station M, a renowned deep-sea observatory situated approximately 130 miles offshore from California. A second specimen was brought to the surface using MBARI’s remotely operated vehicle, Doc Ricketts, in Monterey Canyon. Extensive analysis verified that this species had not been documented in prior research.

“The deep sea is home to an incredible diversity of organisms and a truly beautiful array of adaptations, ” said Mackenzie Gerringer, associate professor at SUNY Geneseo.
