Since its soft launch in August 2024, the invite-only game Deadlock has attracted a remarkable peak player count nearing 100, 000, largely fueled by the introduction of a highly anticipated new character.
In the gaming world, new releases typically see a surge in player numbers during the initial days, which then stabilize as excitement wanes.Deadlock followed this familiar pattern, but with a unique twist: developed by Valve, the game was quietly launched without prior announcements. Fans discovered it organically and extended invitations to their friends, resulting in over 170, 000 players joining the fast-paced PvP shooter upon its debut.
After this initial influx, the game’s player base settled at approximately 20, 000 active users at any given time. This number temporarily spiked to about 67, 000 during the Old Gods, New Blood update on January 23, but the real excitement began with the recent release of a new character.
Massive Surge in Deadlock’s Playerbase
The Old Gods, New Blood update features a new character unveiled weekly over a span of three weeks. The first to join the roster is Rem, an endearing hero crafted in response to community feedback seeking enhanced support capabilities.
With his charming design and formidable abilities, Rem quickly became a pivotal choice for players, enticing many to dive back into the game.
The impact of Rem‘s introduction on player engagement was profound—on January 26, the count surged from around 24, 000 to an astounding 98, 887 within just 12 hours, as reported by Steamdb.

This remarkable achievement is particularly noteworthy considering Deadlock is still an invite-only title. Players can only gain access through invitations from friends, adding an extra layer of exclusivity. Notably, the same day saw the release of competition with Highguard, which reported a peak player count of 97, 249, further illustrating the crowded landscape of PvP games.
Despite these challenges and the restrictive access model, Deadlock appears to be flourishing, backed by a robust and supportive community.
