A peculiar statue in the Mojave Desert has captivated gamers on social media this week. However, recent developments have clarified some of the leading theories about its significance, paving the way for a potentially surprising announcement during The Game Awards.
On November 28, Geoff Keighley shared a striking image of this eerie sculpture accompanied by the phrase “regal.inspiring.thickness.” This phrase, recognized by avid fans as a What3Words location, pinpointed the statue to a secluded area near Joshua Tree, California.
The official Game Awards account reinforced this discovery by sharing a satellite image that confirmed the statue’s location as part of an authorized promotional effort. Almost immediately, curious fans traveled to the site and shared their visuals of a towering, ominous structure adorned with skeletal motifs, horns, and twisted limbs. Upon nightfall, the statue’s red glow added an even more mysterious allure, prompting more ambitious theories.

Debunking Popular Theories: Diablo and God of War
Among the prevalent speculations were expectations of a Diablo 4 expansion or a new installment in the God of War series. However, prominent insiders have dismissed these notions.
Insider Jez Corden initially hinted at a connection between the statue and Diablo, sparking excitement among Blizzard fans. He stated, “Yes but also, more, ” which ignited considerable speculation. However, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier quickly countered this idea, asserting, “No idea where Jez is getting that, but this statue is not teasing the Diablo 4 expansion, ” suggesting that if a new expansion were on the horizon, it would more likely be announced at BlizzCon next year rather than during The Game Awards.

Adding to the speculation, another trusted leaker, Ashong, also downplayed the idea that the statue relates to Sony Santa Monica’s forthcoming God of War project, stating he sees “no connection” to the studio’s current endeavors. Furthermore, streamer Luke Stephens revealed on X that God of War director Cory Barlog asserted during a Twitch chat that the statue has no affiliation with the franchise.

Theories and Speculations: What’s Next?
With both Diablo and God of War ruled out as possibilities, fans are left pondering the true origins of this mysterious statue. Some are already speculating on high-profile titles, including Elder Scrolls VI and even the elusive Half-Life 3—though none of these theories are currently substantiated.
An emergent theory suggests a possible connection to “Saros.” Users have noted elements from the statue mirroring certain features associated with creatures from Saros, including spikes and the positioning of limbs, further fueling the intrigue.
There are versions, that aren’t lit of this photo… and while neither directly fit with the creatures from Saros, there’s elements in both of them, like the smaller spikes (on the head) and the direction the use of the “limbs”as well as a lot of dead around the second creature.pic.twitter.com/KzM7GvSC61
