Recent reports have unveiled that the beloved StarCraft franchise may soon return to its shooting roots, with two new games potentially in development. Among these projects, one is being crafted by Nexon, the studio behind Arc Raiders.

Since the release of StarCraft II sixteen years ago and the completion of its last expansion a decade later, the series has remained a cornerstone of the real-time strategy (RTS) genre. Despite the passage of time, the fanbase continues to yearn for new content.

Blizzard Entertainment previously attempted to transition StarCraft into the shooter genre with the announcement of StarCraft Ghost back in 2002. This project, a third-person shooter that incorporated stealth elements, was ultimately shelved in 2006. However, it appears that the franchise may be heading back toward this avenue.

Nexon’s Role in StarCraft Revival

Initial reports earlier this year suggested that a third-person shooter featuring StarCraft would debut at BlizzCon 2026. According to The Korea Economic Daily, Nexon is also in the early stages of developing its own interpretation of the StarCraft universe. This includes forming a specialized internal team and making key personnel additions.

A significant appointment is lead planner Choi Jun-ho, who gained recognition for creating the popular custom map ‘Shrine Breaker (Shinppu).’ His extensive knowledge of the franchise could greatly influence the success of this new endeavor.

Two Distinct Shooter Projects Underway

Earlier in January, it was reported that Blizzard is also developing a third-person shooter, with expectations for a reveal at the same BlizzCon event. Journalist Jason Schreier noted in his upcoming book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment that the Nexon project is likely separate from that being developed internally by Blizzard. If true, this could mean that two distinct titles are currently in production within the StarCraft franchise.

“It’s uncertain if this is accurate, but if it is, it is unrelated to the StarCraft shooter currently in development by Blizzard, ” Schreier commented, sparking interest in the potential revival of the series.

This marks a significant shift for a franchise largely dormant outside of competitive play and remasters over the last decade. Following the acquisition by Microsoft, there’s a renewed focus on revitalizing classic titles, with StarCraft often at the forefront of these discussions. Phil Spencer has openly expressed a desire to bring back beloved IPs.

If both Nexon and Blizzard proceed with their respective projects, we may finally see StarCraft make a robust comeback to the gaming world.

Fans speculate that the storied Koprulu sector could soon be bustling with activity once again.
