New World Record Set in Six-Day Dance Dance Revolution Marathon

In an extraordinary feat that blends gaming passion and physical endurance, a Hungarian gamer recently set a new Guinness World Record by playing Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) for an astonishing six days straight. During this marathon session, they managed to burn over 22, 000 calories, showcasing the strenuous nature of both gaming and athletic endurance.

Szabolcs ‘GrassHopper’ Csépe, a 34-year-old IT engineer, took on this monumental challenge after two decades of engaging with DDR. His goal was to secure a place in the annals of gaming history, and in 2024, he succeeded by completing 144 consecutive hours of DDR play, establishing not only the longest rhythm game marathon but also the longest video game marathon recorded to date.

Csépe’s journey was anything but easy. He tackled a rigorous lineup of over 3, 000 songs without a break, pushing his physical limits as he danced continuously. In an exclusive interview with Guinness World Records, he detailed the numerous obstacles he faced, particularly the challenge of maintaining his energy levels.

Devising a strategic plan for nutrition and hydration became crucial because Csépe could not afford to stop for meals; he needed to maintain his rhythm.“Standing for long hours is not something that humans are designed for, ” he noted, highlighting the physical toll of such a strenuous endeavor.

Csépe’s experience is not his first foray into record-setting; he previously achieved accolades in various gaming categories, including the longest marathon sessions for a puzzle game, a racing game, and even a Naruto game. He surpassed the previous dance game record, held by American player Carrie Swidecki, who danced for 138 hours straight using Just Dance back in 2015.

This record-setting achievement not only emphasizes Csépe’s dedication and skill in DDR but also brings attention to the increasing recognition of video gaming as a legitimate form of physical activity, further bridging the gap between traditional sports and eSports.
