Nintendo Acquires Mortal Kombat 1 Port Studio Shiver Entertainment

Nintendo, a Japanese multinational video game company, recently revealed its acquisition of Shiver Entertainment. The studio was previously owned by Embracer Group and is renowned for its expertise in porting games to various platforms. This news marks an exciting addition to Nintendo’s portfolio.

This announcement came after Nintendo publicly announced their acquisition of Shiver Entertainment from Embracer Group on May 21, 2024. The official press release, which can be found on Nintendo’s website, stated that the purchase amount was undisclosed. Embracer Group is the parent company of Gearbox Entertainment, THQ Nordic, and several other video game development studios. Nintendo also revealed that Shiver Entertainment will become a wholly owned subsidiary as they will acquire 100% of its outstanding shares.

Shiver has a history of collaborating with Nintendo and has collaborated with various publishers and developers on major game projects. Recently, the studio successfully ported Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1 to the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s acquisition of Shiver solidifies its track record of producing high-quality video game developments in the future.

Nintendo’s goal is to acquire top-notch resources for the porting and development of software titles. The company’s next console, the Nintendo Switch 2, is rumored to be released next year, indicating that Nintendo is looking towards a future where their platform can support a wider variety of games. However, Nintendo has assured that their approach will remain the same. “Even after [Shiver] joins the Nintendo group, their focus will continue to be on porting and developing software for various platforms, including the Nintendo Switch.”

Despite the major acquisition, Nintendo reassures investors that its financial performance for the current fiscal year will only be slightly impacted. Moreover, the company has stated that the acquisition is still pending completion, subject to meeting all customary closing requirements. This suggests that Nintendo has ambitious plans in store for the coming years, which should be a source of excitement for gamers.
