Nintendo has recently responded to community concerns regarding the censorship of the episodic superhero video game, Dispatch, on its Switch console. The controversy stems from the fact that the game was released in January 2026 with default censorship settings that players found limiting.
The Nintendo Switch version of Dispatch differs significantly from its PC and PlayStation 5 counterparts, particularly in its handling of sensitive content. Notably, it eliminates player-controlled options, imposing black bars over nudity, censoring profanity with bleeps, and omitting suggestive audio from various scenes.
In a statement reported by GoNintendo, Nintendo emphasized its role in reinforcing content ratings and platform guidelines, clarifying that it does not directly alter third-party games.
Understanding the Censorship Controversy
Nintendo’s statement outlined its requirements for games on its platforms, stating, “Nintendo requires all games to receive ratings from independent organizations and to meet our established content and platform guidelines.” They further noted that they notify partners if their titles do not comply with such guidelines but stressed that they do not modify third-party content. Additionally, the company refrained from discussing specifics about content alterations or the criteria applied in those assessments.
This lack of transparency regarding the restrictions in the Switch version of Dispatch caught many players by surprise, with several expressing that they might have opted for a different platform had they been aware of these limitations beforehand.

Although AdHoc Studio has not made an official statement regarding refund inquiries, they did address the censorship situation for the Switch version in a statement provided to Eurogamer on January 28. They noted, “Different platforms have different content criteria, and submissions are evaluated individually. We worked with Nintendo to ensure the content within the title met the criteria to release on their platforms, but the core narrative and gameplay experience remains identical to the original release.”
