Nintendo has reached a significant achievement as its Nintendo Switch has officially surpassed one of the company’s longest-standing sales records, previously held by the iconic Nintendo DS.
Launched in 2004, the Nintendo DS revolutionized portable gaming with its innovative dual screens and touch controls, distinguishing itself in a market that typically favored simpler gaming experiences. This strategic approach resulted in remarkable success, with the DS selling an impressive 154.02 million units globally, making it Nintendo’s top-selling console for many years.
Until now, the Nintendo DS comfortably outperformed its predecessors, including the Game Boy, which sold 118.69 million units, and the Wii, which accumulated 101.63 million sales. However, recent data from Nintendo’s 2025 financial report indicates a historic shift as the Nintendo Switch has officially moved ahead in total sales.
Nintendo Switch: A New Era of Sales Leadership
According to the latest report, as of December 31, 2025, the Nintendo Switch has achieved sales of 155.37 million units worldwide. This milestone places it just over 1 million units ahead of the Nintendo DS, signifying the Switch’s overwhelming popularity and acceptance among gamers.

The financial report further reveals insights into the Nintendo Switch 2, which has sold 17.37 million units to date. While this figure may seem modest compared to earlier consoles, it’s important to note that the Switch 2’s later launch means it has had less time to cultivate a substantial user base. When considering that the Wii U sold 13.56 million units and the Nintendo 3DS achieved 75.94 million, the early sales figures for the Switch 2 suggest a promising trajectory.
The ascent of the Nintendo Switch to the top of Nintendo’s sales chart underscores the console’s versatility and appeal. Its unique ability to seamlessly transition between portable and home gaming has ensured its sustained relevance, continually driving sales as it matures in the market. The Switch’s status as Nintendo’s highest-selling device highlights a clear trend: the handheld-focused gaming approach resonates deeply with many players.
