Despite its status as one of the most iconic movies of the 21st century, horror fans are struggling to locate it due to the exorbitant prices of physical media and the limited availability of streaming options, leading many to deem it “impossible to find.”
One of the most frustrating effects of the increase in streaming services is the excessive amount of direct debits for subscriptions to platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney Plus. However, when you have a specific show or movie in mind, it is often not available on any of these platforms.
Occasionally, there is a straightforward explanation. In essence, movies are leased to particular streaming platforms for a finite period of time. If it is not available on any of the services you are subscribed to, it is likely to be found on another (and unfortunately, it is probably the one you do not have a subscription for). Nevertheless, on occasion, films disappear from streaming without a clear explanation, leaving you with no choice but to search for it on DVD or Blu-ray.
According to Reddit, it is “stupid impossible”to find Danny Boyle’s 2002 zombie classic, 28 Days Later, which is widely considered one of the greatest horror films of all time.
RecordEnjoyer2013 expressed frustration about the availability of “28 Days Later,”stating that no matter how far they searched online, the film was not available for streaming, renting, or purchasing in any non-British format on DVD, Blu-Ray, or any other physical media.
Unfortunately, it remains a fact that 28 Days Later is not accessible on any streaming service in the US, and purchasing or renting it digitally is not an option. Moreover, it seems to be out of stock in physical form. A quick search on eBay will reveal that Blu-ray copies are being sold at exorbitant prices, with some listed at nearly $100, even without the special steelbook packaging.
Unfortunately, the sequel to the former, 28 Weeks Later, is currently only available on Hulu and digital platforms.
Despite the exact reason being unclear, it is believed that the difficulty in finding 28 Days Later in the US is a result of Disney losing the rights to the original film. As 28 Years Later is being produced by Sony Pictures, there is a possibility of a re-release of 28 Days Later in the near future, whether it be through streaming or a 4K remaster. However, this has not been officially confirmed.
One Redditor pointed out that this film highlights the unreliability of streaming and is one of the reasons they prefer to buy DVDs. They found it absurd that a highly acclaimed and popular movie is not readily available, likely due to licensing problems. Another Redditor expressed hope for the film to eventually become available for streaming in more countries and for a new physical release to coincide with the 28th anniversary.
In the meantime, you can discover all the information we have on 28 Years Later, browse through other recently released films to watch, and uncover upcoming horror movies to look forward to in 2024.
