One Piece: Luffy finally reveals why the Gear 5 transforms him

In episode 1090 of One Piece, Luffy finally revealed why Gear 5 gave him white hair, which can be found on his wanted poster.

It is now common knowledge: One Piece hero Luffy’s Gear 5 is one of the craziest powers in Eiichiro Oda’s work . It seems that no other devil fruit power can match it. It must be said that the series took its time to develop the abilities of its rubber hero: it took two decades to get there! From an ordinary Paramecia type fruit, we finally arrived at a mythical Zoan type fruit.

Obviously, his first appearance in the anime had to make an impression. And she succeeded, becoming a sensation on the Internet – notably thanks to the exemplary animation of the scene -, with fans rejoicing at this new comforting power, after years of heartbreaking episodes in the Wano arc.

However, the Gear 5 is still subject to a lot of debate. And one of the most heated among spectators has long been the question of Luffy’s transformation when he uses this power. Because in addition to deploying a force having an impact on his environment, the hero changes physically: the most striking detail being his hair which changes from black to white.

In One Piece Episode 1090, Luffy and his crew rescue Bonney, a member of the Generation Terrible Pirates, while she is lost on the open sea. After narrowly escaping from a sea monster, Luffy, Jinbe, Chopper and Bonney find themselves stranded on Egghead Island. This is where the pirate questions Luffy about the strange appearance he has on the wanted poster.

Because she is perplexed: the white hair in the image has not remained, and Luffy has regained his brown color. The future king of pirates then explains that this head is the one he has when he is free. The hero’s interpretation of his own power makes sense, given the true history of his devil fruit.

Because after its awakening, the Paramecia fruit Gomu Gomu no Mi transforms into the mythical Zoan fruit Hito Hito no Mi: Nika model. The latter was a mythical warrior once worshiped as the god of the sun by slaves of times now past: Dr. Vegapunk in fact affirms that the existence of Nika is only mentioned in the oldest works. In recent books, the warrior or sun god is completely absent.

Thus, Nika’s tale is only known by rare people in Luffy’s present. The Hito Hito no Mi: Nika Model allows its user to acquire the traits and abilities of the mythical character. This is believed to be the power of the first Joy Boy, now claimed by Monkey D. Luffy.

In Wano, Zunesh claimed that Joy Boy had returned, explaining that he heard the “drum of liberation” . That’s when Luffy regained consciousness and transformed into Gear 5.

That Luffy calls himself “free” when he adopts the appearance of Gear 5 therefore makes complete sense, and supports his strong connection with the mythical figure of Nika and Joy Boy. We can also see it as an ultimate realization of the objectives of the pirates, always in search of a freedom which forces them to oppose the Navy and its rules.
