Oshi no Ko Season 2 Episode 3 Review: Doga Kobo Peeks into the Life of a Mangaka through Abiko Samejima’s Outbursts

With the airing of the third episode of Oshi no Ko season 2, the anime delved further into the daily life of a manga artist. Despite fans eagerly anticipating Aqua Hoshino’s success in helping scriptwriter GOA keep his job, the anime shifted its attention to Yoriko Kichijouji and Abiko Samejima, two manga creators who handle their workload in vastly different ways.

Not all anime fans may be aware, but those immersed in the animanga community must know about the common issue of manga creators being overworked, resulting in health problems. This theme was also portrayed in Oshi no Ko season 2 episode 3, as the young and popular manga creator, Abiko Samejima, appeared to be pushing herself to the brink while working on her series, ‘Tokyo Blade.’

Despite widespread knowledge of manga creators facing difficulties in maintaining their health, it is likely that many fans are unaware of the severity of their situation. However, in episode 3 of Oshi no Ko season 2, Doga Kobo sheds light on the harsh realities that manga creators face behind the scenes when their series gains widespread popularity.

Initially, the anime showcased the struggles of Yoriko Kichijouji, an experienced manga artist, in managing her workload. According to the show, she had previously been serialized in a weekly magazine, which required her to work long hours from 9 AM to 4 AM. However, as time went on, she became better at managing her workload and standing up to her editors when necessary. This was evident in the fact that she was now serialized in a monthly magazine instead of a weekly one.

Despite her situation, she was content, had spare time available, and was not concerned with meeting deadlines.

Abiko Samejima, like numerous manga creators, faced difficulties when it came to entrusting others with her work. As a result, she opted to work without any assistants who were unable to meet her artistic standards, resulting in her single-handedly creating a weekly manga.

Additionally, she refused to compromise on the quality of her artwork, often dedicating hours to drawing intricate details for the characters and backgrounds. Unfortunately, this led to her only getting two hours of sleep per day. As one could imagine, this lifestyle was ultimately harmful.

Therefore, despite Yoriko Kichijouji’s attempts to persuade her, Abiko remained resistant to change. Her unsociable nature made it difficult for her to connect with others, and she would often have outbursts when given suggestions. In an effort to avoid conflict, she would go to great lengths to please others, even if it meant adhering to a grueling weekly manga schedule, altering plot points based on popularity polls, and taking on all the work by herself.

Despite always doing everything on her own, Abiko had a difficult time trusting others with her work. This was the main reason why she was hesitant to let GOA take over. Thankfully, Doga Kobo was able to capture and convey these emotions flawlessly.

The events of Oshi no Ko season 2 episode 3 revealed that Doga Kobo had also fallen into the same trap as Abiko. In the episode, Yoriko expressed her concern that Abiko was altering the plot of her story to cater to fans’ preferences.

It appeared that Doga Kobo had followed suit with the anime episode. The manga series clearly showed that Ruby Hoshino was not meant to make an appearance in this particular episode. However, the animation team most likely did not want to disappoint Ruby’s fans for a third consecutive week. Therefore, they incorporated elements from previous manga chapters and added some new scenes in the anime to satisfy fans with some Ruby and B-Komachi moments.

Although the scenes do not damage the overall storyline, they may feel out of place for fans who have already read the manga.
