Overwatch 2 enthusiasts should reconsider the use of classic gaming insults, as Blizzard has recently enforced a permanent ban on a player for referring to another as a “noob.”

Since its debut, Overwatch 2 has gradually reclaimed its audience with the introduction of new characters, game modes, and much-anticipated features like hero bans and map voting in its competitive landscape. However, despite these improvements, the frustration surrounding Blizzard’s reporting and moderation system remains prevalent among players.

A thread on the Overwatch subreddit highlighted a situation where a player found themselves facing a permanent suspension due to “inappropriate communications.” The incriminating chat log included the words “noob, ” “?, ” and “worth.”

Upon appealing the decision, the player received a response from Blizzard support, which reiterated their stance: “This account has received multiple penalties for this type of behavior and thus multiple opportunities to correct that behavior, ” stated a Game Master.

The Overwatch 2 Community’s Reaction: A Mixed Bag

The community’s response to the “noob” ban was overwhelmingly supportive of the banned player. Many users expressed their disbelief, asserting that such terminology has become a staple within gaming culture. Comments included sentiments like, “Unbelievably pathetic. Noob is a player title for Christ’s sake, ” and calls for the implementation of filters to accommodate those sensitive to certain words.

This situation is not an isolated incident; there have been previous instances where players faced penalties for relatively mild language. For example, in 2024, professional player Mason ‘durpee’ Kuehne was suspended for using the word “f**k, ” which is humorously referenced by the Overwatch character Cassidy on his belt buckle with the phrase “BAMF.”

Moreover, earlier in January of the previous year, another player reported facing a suspension for simply typing “GG, ” “yippeee, ” and “nice shot.”

Given Blizzard’s firm stance on chat moderation, Overwatch 2 players are advised to steer clear of even the most benign gaming slang to avoid the risk of permanent account bans.
