Overwatch 2 is poised to eliminate a significant portion of its Player versus Environment (PVE) content due to low levels of player engagement. Specifically, players will have only a few more weeks left to participate in the Hero Mastery courses.
The compatibility of PVE elements with Overwatch has been fraught since the game’s inception. While the transition to Overwatch 2 was largely centered on expanding PVE offerings, Blizzard’s ambitious plans have not materialized as envisioned.
After facing multiple delays, the game finally introduced three brief story missions in 2023, priced at $15 USD. Unfortunately, this content did not resonate well with players, leading to the cancellation of any future story developments.
In response to this, Blizzard began releasing Hero Mastery missions, which are simplified challenge experiences. However, these too struggled to gain traction among the player base. Now, Blizzard has opted not only to halt the development of future Mastery courses but to completely remove the existing ones from the game.

Originally, PVE content was touted as a key selling point for Overwatch 2. However, the recent developments have brought that vision into question.
Hero Mastery Missions to be Removed
With the announcement of a major collaboration with Persona 5 coinciding with Season 18, Overwatch 2 Community Manager Kaedi provided important updates on the Blizzard forums.
Kaedi indicated, “As we focus more on enhancing Quick Play, Competitive modes, Stadium, and other gameplay modes, we will be redirecting our efforts away from previous game modes that haven’t garnered significant attention.”
Consequently, the Hero Mastery courses will be “sunset, ” which is a euphemism for removal from the game, commencing in Season 19, expected later this year.
Although these courses were designed to be simpler and rolled out as seasonal content over time, they encompassed 17 of the game’s 44 heroes. Sadly, all these courses will soon be unavailable due to this strategic pivot.
“Players have until the conclusion of Season 18 to finalize their Lifetime Challenges for Hero Mastery and vie for spots on each course’s Top 500 leaderboards, ” Kaedi noted.“Post-Season 18, all Hero Mastery Courses that have been released will no longer be accessible.”

The Hero Mastery missions were also integral to the seasonal updates, and their removal marks a significant shift in Overwatch 2’s approach.
Season 18 is set to commence on August 26, 2025, with an anticipated conclusion in October 2025.
As things stand, players can expect only three remaining PVE missions in Overwatch 2, along with the training range and occasional rotating content such as Junkenstein’s Revenge.
