During the recent Overwatch Spotlight event, the development team unveiled two exciting new heroes set to join the game in the upcoming seasons. This announcement comes at a crucial time as Overwatch faces intensified competition from titles like Marvel Rivals.
On February 12, the event showcased not just the new characters but also introduced a groundbreaking “Perks” system that promises to transform gameplay dynamics, in addition to the return of lootboxes—a feature that many fans had eagerly anticipated.
Introducing the New Heroes in Overwatch
The first character debuting in Season 16 is Freja, a Damage hero with a rich backstory. Formerly a search-and-rescue operative for Overwatch, she transitioned into a bounty hunter following the organization’s disbandment. Freja marks the 19th addition to the Damage class, joining the ranks of heroes like Venture, who was introduced in Season 10.

Equipped with a crossbow and a striking cape, Freja is anticipated to be one of the most skilled heroes in the game, rewarding players with exceptional aim and tactical awareness through her explosive arrows and exceptional mobility. She is expected to appeal to fans of characters such as Widowmaker, Sojourn, and Hanzo. Prior to her official launch in Season 16, players will have the opportunity to engage in a brief playtest to experience her abilities firsthand.
In addition to Freja, the Overwatch team revealed a second character, codenamed “Aqua.” From the initial concept art, Aqua appears to wield water manipulation powers and utilizes a staff as his primary weapon.

While details about Aqua’s official name and role remain under wraps, speculation suggests he may fill the support role, which currently has fewer heroes compared to other categories. Aqua is set to make his appearance in Season 18, and a playtest is likely to be conducted prior to his release, following the established trends. More information regarding Aqua will be released in the months leading up to his launch.
Before the arrival of Freja, players can look forward to a significant shift in gameplay with the introduction of the “Perks” system, which will be implemented in Season 15, set to go live on February 18.
