In Octopath Traveler 2, the cleric is Temenos, who works at the Church of the Sacred Flame. However, formally he is better known as an inquisitor.
As a minister of Glaster’s church, Temenos questions everything and everyone, including the people associated with his own church. So, if in the first game the priest goes on a pilgrimage to light the Sacred Flame, then in Octopath Traveler 2 Temenos must solve the mystery of the murder, looking for clues scattered around the world.
divine origin
The introduction to the first chapter of Temenos begins with the eight gods uniting to defeat the evil goddess of chaos. This is an example of the game’s combat system, but players shouldn’t get used to large numbers; the evil god and his list of abilities are extremely powerful.
Since this section is scripted and players can choose any action, in any case, the plot will unfold until it is interrupted by a forgotten line.
Back to reality
Temenos was telling the story of the Sacred Flame to a group of children, but he had to finish early because he forgot how it all happened. After the children left, Pontiff Yorg arrived and spoke to Temenos alone in his study in the cathedral. The pontiff suspected that the heretics were taking some steps and wanted to talk to him about it.
Players can explore the city and talk to the locals. The soldier on the way to the stairs means that players can only approach the department store from one side – this is done to ensure that Temenos is in the right place when the scene starts.
Several rebels have arrived in the city, and they are causing a lot of trouble. The confrontation does not go well for them, but this gives Temenos the opportunity to meet with Shout, the new knight of the Sanctuary. Shout doesn’t know where the cathedral is, so players can try out Temenos’ Daytime Action Guide, which allows him to show someone around the city.
Shout Manual allows Temenos to bring NPCs into combat. However, NPCs will only become his followers if his level is high enough to impress them. In this section, Temenos can talk to several people in the city and use Shout Conduit on them. Do this and then leave Flamechurch through the north exit and head towards the cathedral.
How to deal with Temenos
The path to the cathedral is dangerous, so be careful. This is the right time to explain how the character works.
- Temenos is a cleric, which means he can heal allies and deal minor damage to enemies. The only weapon he can use is a staff, so his ability to hit enemies’ weak spots is limited.
- Temenos’ starting skills include a healing spell that targets each ally and a light spell that hits a single enemy. Acquired skills include defense buffs, a respawn spell cast on each ally, and a staff skill that restores SP based on damage dealt.
- Temenos gains the Moonlight Judgment unique talent, which places a free debuff on every enemy encountered during the night. This includes any boss fights that take place at night. At least initially, this debuff reduces the enemy’s physical and elemental defenses for 3 rounds and inflicts a blinding effect for 1 round.
- Temenos can also summon an NPC follower into battle. It costs one turn, but the NPC will act three times before leaving. The summoned NPC cannot be targeted and has no HP or SP, but will sometimes take a hit meant for Temenos.
- Temenos can summon NPCs a number of times equal to their Summoned stat. This number can be seen by other players when deciding whether to send an NPC. Once the players reach this number, the NPC is sent home and Temenos has to send someone new.
- Temenos can only have one follower at a time. If players send someone while Temenos has an ally, they must choose who to keep.
- Temenos can guide NPCs for free, but some NPCs will not follow him until he reaches a high enough level.
- Temenos is a good choice for a first player character. The healer class is always useful in groups, and while Temenos can only use two types of damage, he makes up for it with his hidden power.
- When Temenos is active, it removes all shields from every enemy it hits, no matter how vulnerable they are. This means that a four-hit staff strike always removes four shields.
Path of the Pilgrims
During the first battle on Pilgrim’s Trail, players may notice that Shout has no summon limit. However, this only lasts until Temenos reaches the entrance to the cave. At this point, Scream becomes a temporary companion.
He attacks with a sword and has the skills Hide (takes damage as an ally), Shield of God (increases physical defense) and Sacred Strike (hit all enemies and reduce their elemental protection).
On this journey, players will encounter Mountain Monkey 1, which is weak to swords and staves. They will also encounter a rockadillo, which is weak against staves, and a giant falcon, which is weak against sword attacks.
As players approach the cave entrance, they will notice a chest containing an Inspirational Plum. To the right of the cave is another chest with healing grapes. Once inside, players can go to the right and go down to the water; a canoe will automatically appear so that Temenos can cross the lake. On the far bank is a stimulus ring; there is also an exit on the left side of the cave leading to Hard Nut.
When the players have everything, it’s time to go to the cathedral.
lighting the way
When Temenos and Creek reached the cathedral, night fell. But the door is locked, so Temenos wants to find another way to get in. At this point, players are introduced to his night action: Suggestion.
The compulsion is similar to the “Challenge” and “Taunt” actions from the first Octopath Traveler game, and Temenos will duel the NPC one-on-one. However, in this case, the goal is to break the NPC’s shield once and receive information as a reward. Players should remember that an NPC’s health cannot drop below zero during a forced duel. The only way to win is to break all their shields.
You can now force several NPCs to enter the cathedral courtyard, but only three have green dialogue boxes. One to the right of the fire fountain and one standing in front of two buildings to the left. The last one, Vados the Architect, has the information.
Players can also obtain the Shadow Soulstone from a chest in the house behind Vados. To continue, they must enter the building to the right of the cathedral.
Cathedral cellars
Here in Octopath Traveler 2 you will encounter new enemies. Crimson Ammonite is weak to swords and light, Bones of Inod is weak to staves and light, Giant Slug is weak to staves, and Scaled Viper is weak to swords.
First of all, players must go to the left of the entrance, climb the stairs and get a bright soul stone. They should then enter the water and walk half way to the island to get the Inspirational Plum. The last chest is on a hidden path behind a large statue, but if players follow it, they will receive Pilgrim’s Staff. Finally, there is a vendor by the stairs with some equipment that players may want to buy.
The stairs lead directly to the cathedral, and in the room next to the exit, players will find the Oliva of Life. Then go straight ahead because in the bedroom at the far end of some of the benches is a Light Soul Stone. At this point, use the save point and heal up, because at the end of the benches a boss fight awaits you.
How to defeat Felvarg
- Felvarg is vulnerable to swords and light, but not to staves.
- Felvarg’s Rip to Pieces action deals damage to a party member and heals himself for about the same amount.
- When the text “Felvarg targets Temenos!” appears, he charges a powerful attack. The Fool must use Cover before making his next move, or Temenos must defend.
- During the battle with Felvarg, the hidden power of Temenos is revealed. When Felvarg charges, he blocks his vulnerable spots, but the Judgment effect bypasses this.
Crime scene analysis
After the fall of Felvarg, Temenos will start rebuilding the scene. The player can click on the blue spark on the left to get a Broken Cathedral Window, on the blue spark on the right to get a Withered Incense Aroma, and on the blue spark in the middle to get an Overturned Candlestick.
After a few cutscenes, you will be outside the cathedral again. You can explore the area, bid farewell to the mourners, or even leave the cathedral grounds, but to complete chapter 1, you must enter the archive and go to the bookshelves on the back wall. Temenos will lose Krik as a companion, but will begin his journey to find the killer.
Octopath Traveler 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5 and Switch.
