Hearthstone has launched its first set of adjustments and balance updates for Season 11 in the Battlegrounds mode. These changes are designed to enhance some game archetypes while tuning down those that have proven to be overpowered.

Here’s a breakdown of the significant minion and tavern spell modifications included in the 33.2.1 patch.

Following the nerfs that affected nearly all archetypes at the end of Season 10, several warbands are expected to improve significantly in terms of power. This is particularly true for Demon Jugglers, end-of-turn Pirates, and Mycologist Battlecry Murlocs.

Key Buffs in Patch 33.2.1

The following minions and one tavern spell have received essential buffs:

  • Primitive Painter: Buffs +1/+2 instead of +1/+1 for every tier 3 card played.
  • Bream Counter: Now provides +4/+4 instead of +3/+3 for each Murloc in hand.
  • Deathly Striker: Changed to Avenge (4) from Avenge (5).
  • Friendly Geist: Increases Tavern spell Attack by +2 instead of +1 for each Deathrattle.
  • Yorik Smite: Grants +2/+2 for minions and +6/+6 for golden minions at the end of each turn.
  • Ship Master Eudora: Now provides +8/+8 for minions, with gold versions retaining their bonuses permanently upon Deathrattle.
  • Improviser: Adjusted to Avenge (2) from Avenge (3).
  • Devout Hellcaller: Increased to +1/+2 for every instance of Demon damage.
  • Haunted Carapace: Now grants +3/+1 instead of +2/+1 to minions until the next turn.

The buff to Primitive Painter enhances the capabilities of Battlecry Murlocs, enabling them to bolster their effectiveness beyond merely relying on the right spell, such as Flotsam Flinger or Magicfin Mycologist. Players can strategically play various tier 1 to 3 cards to empower their entire team while searching for the best combinations.

Despite the enhancements, Bream Counter remains somewhat lackluster due to the weakened Bassgill archetype, which struggles without the tier 7 introduction of Morgl. Meanwhile, the Reborn Undead archetype, which has been underutilizing Deathly Striker, may find more value with its new Avenge (4) adjustment to speed up access to key units.

Additional buffs for Friendly Geist and Haunted Carapace aim to stabilize Undead tavern spell builds, making them more competitive.

End-of-turn Pirates that rely on combinations like Lost City Looter, Proud Privateer, Yorik Smites, and Blade Collector could experience an uptick in playability. Ship Master Eudora does get some strategic applications but still feels underwhelming for a tier 6 option.

Nerfs to Overperforming Cards

In addition to buffs, the patch includes several nerfs to cards that have been dominating the gameplay:

  • Sanguine Refiner: Now provides +1/+1 instead of +1/+2 bonuses on Blood Gems through Rally.
  • Vine Climber: Buffs adjusted to +2/+1 from +2/+2.
  • Sundered Matriarch: Health effect reduced to +1 from +2.
  • Stomping Stegodon: Rally buff now gives +1/+1 instead of +2/+2.

The nerf to Sanguine Refiner is slight; however, the real heavy lifting falls on Razorfen Vineweaver and Bonkers, which have often spiraled out of control in scaling when Blood Gems are excessively buffed. Many strategies have come to rely primarily on Razorfen Vineweavers to accumulate as many stats as possible.

As for Vine Climber, while it previously leveraged some amazing combinations with certain quests and the character Millhouse, this nerf might not substantially impact its effectiveness.

The Sundered Matriarch is now better positioned to support Naga compositions, which previously faced challenges in transitioning units effectively for the endgame, notably with Corrupted Myrmidons from Lava Lurkers.

Lastly, Stomping Stegodon has become less viable due to this nerf, which many might argue is warranted. Achieving over 500 stats around turn 8 should not be an expectation for any composition; effectively countering such scenarios is crucial for maintaining fair gameplay in Season 11.
