Path of Exile 2 Developers Acknowledge Brutal Endgame, No Changes Planned

Players of Path of Exile 2 have expressed their concerns regarding the game’s challenging endgame, yet the developers remain committed to preserving its core essence, intentionally upholding the difficulty that defines the experience.

Since launching in early access, Path of Exile 2 has achieved notable success, attracting a significant player base and sustaining engagement. As we approach the first substantial patch of 2025, the developers are poised to introduce several important quality-of-life improvements aiming to enhance the endgame experience.

While adjustments will be made, one aspect set to remain unchanged is the game’s demanding difficulty, which the developers believe is a critical component of the game’s identity. In a recent interview with popular content creators Darth Microtransaction and GhazzyTV, co-directors Mark Roberts and Jonathan Rogers elaborated on the upcoming Patch 0.1.1.

The developers are keenly aware of the ongoing discussions surrounding the risk/reward mechanics of Path of Exile 2, particularly how they affect endgame challenges. Although they acknowledge valid concerns from the community, they hesitate to implement drastic changes that could alter the foundational gameplay.

The Integral Role of Difficulty in Path of Exile 2

Unlike competitors such as Diablo 4, Path of Exile 2 promotes a more strategic and active gameplay approach, particularly evident in the endgame **Atlas maps**, which demand significant dedication from players. Engaging with these maps comes with high stakes; a character death not only means the loss of experience points but also any uncollected loot, requiring players to restart from the beginning, often leading to frustration.

This harsh risk factor adds an engaging tension to the gameplay but understandably causes annoyance to some players who feel their time and efforts are wasted. Despite these grievances, the development team at Grinding Gear Games remains steadfast in maintaining the integrity of their risk/reward system.

As Rogers stated in the interview, “We did discuss quite a lot about whether we wanted to go back on one portal or not. I think it comes down to the fact that it would just not feel the same. The whole ‘death actually mattering’ thing is actually important. You have to have some level of failure being possible.”This highlights their position on the importance of failure as a part of the game’s core experience.

Rogers further explained the significance of loss in experience during Atlas runs, emphasizing that it helps to ensure players engage with the content appropriate to their skill level. “It’s keeping you in the place where you’re supposed to be, as in if you’re dying all the time then you’re probably not ready to keep going up the power curve,” he noted.

Furthermore, the game has drawn comparisons to the Dark Souls series due to its high-stakes gameplay.

Roberts acknowledged that viewing the game’s difficulty through a narrowly critical lens might not be entirely accurate. Both he and Rogers recognized the complexity of balancing various difficulty elements. Rogers stated, “There are a few axes (of difficulty) and I think they’re just a bit too severe when all combined together. I need to think about it certainly a lot more and get a little bit more analytics on it as well and actually see what the actual problems are.”

As a result, the Grinding Gear Games team currently remains cautious about altering the quintessential risk factors within Path of Exile 2. However, players can look forward to Patch 0.1.1, which aims to enhance rewards by improving drop rates for rare gear and materials. Such changes may help to strike a more equitable balance between the game’s risks and rewards, catering to a broader range of player experiences.
