Ethan Guo Detained During Ambitious Charity Flight Challenge
In a remarkable yet controversial attempt to raise funds for cancer charities, 19-year-old pilot Ethan Guo has found himself detained in Antarctica. His charitable initiative, which involves visiting all seven continents while flying solo in a Cesena C182, has garnered significant attention across social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
Over the past six months, Guo has been documenting his journey, aiming to raise $1 million for cancer-related causes. His adventures have captivated audiences worldwide, particularly as he navigates isolated regions alone.
Unauthorized Flight and Detention Explained
Up until the end of June, Guo had been consistently sharing updates with his followers, with his last post showing his arrival in the Philippines. However, trouble arose when he was detained by Chilean officials after deviating from his approved flight plan.
According to Chilean media reports, the incident occurred on June 28, when Guo took off from Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Airport in Punta Arenas. Instead of following his designated route, he made a sudden decision to fly to Antarctica, ultimately landing at Teniente Marsh Airfield, which is located in Chilean Antarctic territory.
Prosecutor Cristián Crisosto explained the severity of Guo’s actions, stating, “With this conduct, the defendant seriously endangered the safety of air traffic to Antarctica and the Magallanes Region, which is why he was charged.”
As noted by La Tercera, Guo is currently required to check in monthly with Chilean authorities but may leave Antarctica for Punta Arenas if weather conditions allow.

Moving forward, Guo is prohibited from leaving the Magallanes Region, with a court hearing scheduled for July 11 to address the ramifications of his actions. The potential consequences remain uncertain; in the United States, for instance, the FAA has the authority to impose fines as high as $100, 000 for violations of aviation regulations, alongside possible revocation of pilot licenses.
As this situation unfolds, it raises questions about the balance between adventurous pursuits and adherence to aviation laws—an important consideration for aspiring aviators everywhere.
