In recent news from China, Smart Glasses have emerged as a tool for academic dishonesty, allowing students to receive answers during examinations directly in their line of sight. This trend raises significant concerns about the implications of technology on education and integrity.
Over the past few years, numerous companies have released various models of Smart Glasses, each equipped with unique functionalities. These devices have the ability to record daily activities, facilitate phone calls, and even replace traditional headphones, while more advanced versions incorporate sophisticated AI applications designed for everyday tasks like cooking and navigating.
However, the increasing prevalence of these devices has ignited debates regarding security and privacy. Users have reported concerns that some Smart Glasses contain cameras that may inadvertently capture personal moments, raising worries about surveillance and consent. A particularly alarming aspect is that certain private footage may be reviewed by humans, leading to the possibility of someone viewing intimate situations without consent.
The Rising Trend of Cheating with Smart Glasses
According to a report by Rest of World, students in China are renting Smart Glasses specifically to gain an advantage in their studies. A university student, who shared her experience under the pseudonym Vivian, admitted to using the Rokid AI glasses for not only academic purposes but also for practical uses such as comparing prices of clothing.
Vivian has also extended the use of these glasses to her peers, allowing them to utilize this technology to cheat on tests. The rental market for such devices has rapidly expanded, with reports indicating that a single entrepreneur has provided over 1, 000 pairs of glasses to students in just four months. Subjects such as English and Mathematics have become focal points for this academic malpractice.

While these Smart Glasses are officially banned during major examinations, the lack of rigorous checks by educators allows many students to circumvent the rules. With AI technology at their disposal, these students can discreetly obtain answers in real-time, contributing to a rise in cheating incidents.
If educational institutions are to maintain academic integrity, a more comprehensive approach may be necessary to combat this growing trend. As technology continues to evolve, it is crucial to establish new policies and measures to ensure fair testing environments.
