Squid Game Season 2’s Abandoned Plot Reveals Possibility for Front Man Spinoff

Lee Byung-hun, the iconic Front Man of Squid Game, recently discussed his role in the critically acclaimed series, shedding light on an alternative vision for Season 2 that he and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk initially contemplated. While this concept didn’t materialize in the current storyline, it may well serve as a foundation for an intriguing potential spinoff.

Squid Game Season 3 is set to premiere on Netflix on June 27, 2025, promising to conclude the narrative arc of Seong Gi-hun, portrayed by Lee Jung-jae (Player 456).However, the conclusion of this installment does not necessarily signal the franchise’s end.

In recent promotional interviews, Dong-hyuk hinted at his openness towards creating a spin-off series that would align with the overarching storyline. Although firm plans are still in flux, the wealth of intriguing side characters offers abundant narrative possibilities.

During an enlightening interview with Forbes, Byung-hun elaborated on the evolution of Season 2, which was initiated partly due to overwhelming fan enthusiasm. He expressed his thoughts on exploring a prequel focusing on Front Man, a notion that had previously crossed Dong-hyuk’s mind as well.

“While I was filming Our Blues on Jeju Island, Director Hwang came to visit, as he had decided to proceed with Squid Game Season 2, ” Byung-hun recounted.“Out of curiosity, I asked him, ‘What’s Season 2 going to be about?’ He candidly replied, ‘Honestly, I haven’t figured that out yet.’ So, I suggested, ‘Could it revolve around how In-ho (the Front Man) got involved in the games and what was happening back then?’”

“Interestingly, he was contemplating a similar direction, ” Byung-hun continued, revealing that despite initial discussions, the narrative took an unanticipated turn, focusing more on present events instead of delving into historical backstories. Byung-hun noted, “I was quite surprised by this shift.”

Moreover, he expressed fascination with the plot twist where Hwang In-ho participates in the games under a false identity, Oh Young-il.“That was a unique twist, one that even surprised me, ” he added.

Even though the trajectory of Squid Game diverged from potential prequel plans, there remains enough substance to develop a compelling spinoff centered on the Front Man. Byung-hun’s celebrated acting prowess, combined with the character’s layered backstory, creates fertile ground for expansion.

In Season 2, viewers gain insights into Front Man’s motivations, including his desperate circumstances: his wife required a liver transplant, which coincided with her pregnancy, and he faced the harsh reality of being fired and drowning in debt to loan sharks. This series of events led him to enter Squid Game, but the specifics of how he came to orchestrate such a nefarious operation remain largely unexplored.

With ample narrative potential still untapped regarding the Front Man, he could serve as a pivotal figure anchoring the future of the Squid Game franchise—should Netflix choose to continue this captivating exploration.
