The origins and true nature of Pochita’s powers and abilities, the Chainsaw Devil in author and illustrator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga series Chainsaw Man, remain a major mystery. Some have accepted the limited explanations given in the series, while others believe there is a deeper mystery surrounding the protagonist’s abilities.
Upon examination of the series’ main themes and other significant evidence, an alternative theory that is widely accepted is that Chainsaw Devil Pochita’s true form is that of the Life or Birth Devil. Though this concept may initially seem absurd, it becomes apparent that this theory holds merit when considering the narrative and other key factors.
Fujimoto’s Deception: The True Identity and Powers of Pochita in Chainsaw Man
One of the most compelling arguments in support of this Chainsaw Man theory is the history of the chainsaw. Dating back to 1780, the first chainsaw was manually operated and designed as a medical instrument to assist with childbirth. This aligns with Pochita’s manifestation as a chainsaw, further supporting the belief that it is the Life/Birth Devil.
Additionally, it has been observed that Devils possess a natural inclination towards violence, regardless of their level of intelligence. This instinctual affinity for destruction and death reinforces the use of chainsaws in Pochita’s design and methods of attack. After all, the Life/Birth Devil wielding a tool designed for aiding birth as a lethal weapon perfectly aligns with these inherent instincts.
In Chainsaw Man, Pochita’s true form as the Hero of Hell has been seen twice, both times manifesting as an “organ scarf”that emerges from Denji’s stomach and coils around his neck. This organ scarf originates from the navel, where the umbilical cord connects to a developing fetus.
The organ scarf encircling Denji’s neck further reinforces the comparison to an umbilical cord, as there is a medical condition called a “cord accident.”This occurs when an umbilical cord becomes wrapped around a baby’s body or neck during birth, causing blockage of blood flow in the umbilical veins and leading to death. This aligns with the fact that Denji appears to lose control of his actions when Pochita assumes the role of the Hero of Hell.
It is crucial to note that all Devils allegedly hear the sound of a revving chainsaw before their reincarnation onto Earth, providing significant evidence for the theory. This evidence is further strengthened by the fact that Pochita, the one responsible for killing these Devils in Hell and sending them to Earth, is also associated with the origins of the chainsaw. Therefore, this evidence serves as a key support for the theory.
Moreover, there are indications within part 2’s storyline itself that further support the notion that Pochita is the true identity of the Chainsaw Devil. One of the most convincing pieces of evidence is the fact that Famine Devil Fami specifically seeks the help of War Devil Yoru and Chainsaw Devil Pochita in their battle against the Death Devil. While Yoru’s role in this fight is uncertain, it is evident that Pochita’s abilities as the Life/Birth Devil would be the perfect counter to the Death Devil, both in ideology and in combat.
It is possible that this is the reason why Pochita was reportedly battling the Four Horsemen Devils before the beginning of the series. Being the Birth/Life Devil, Pochita would naturally oppose the group if Death was their leader, which could also explain why he fought to the extent of needing to transform into a weaker form to recover. Although this remains a theory, it is a well-supported one that could potentially be confirmed by the events of the series.
