“There is a boost feature that levels up the PokéStop by scanning it – this is indicated by a round base. A square base is a normal PokéStop,” one user said, explaining the differences.
“Not really, but their height matters,” one user explained, “If a PokéStop is taller than the others, it can be scanned (filmed) for bonus rewards. If a PokéStop has a white circle around it, that means you haven’t spun it yet.”
“If the square of an inaccessible PokéStop starts spinning violently, it means there is a Team GO Rocket Minion supporting it.”
“What about the blue posts with a vertical diamond pattern well below the top (below the blue circle/square you are talking about)?” one user asked, and another replied, “I think this indicates a sponsored PokéStop?
