Recently, an advertisement promoting a costly PokéCoin bundle ignited a significant backlash among Pokémon Go enthusiasts. Players have increasingly expressed their discontent over the rising expenses associated with this free-to-play mobile game, where much of the available content is now gated behind paid tickets and in-game purchases.
Over the years, fans of Pokémon Go have urged the game’s developer, Niantic, to reduce the volume of paid content integrated into gameplay. Elements such as Mythical Pokémon hidden behind event paywalls and limited-time Shiny boosts accessible only through paid tickets have made it challenging for trainers who wish to enjoy the game without spending money.
Concerns Over Pokémon Go’s Pricing Strategy
Despite promises of better deals, the Pokémon Go web store has not alleviated player concerns. Though purportedly offering more value than the in-game store, the prices remain daunting. A recent promotional post by the Pokémon Go team escalated player frustration after announcing, “Trainers, get 50% more PokéCoins when you buy the $99.99 PokéCoin bundle from the #PokemonGO Web Store!”

This limited-time offer allows players to spend $100 for 23, 500 PokéCoins, which is 9, 000 more than what the same bundle costs in the in-game shop. However, the response from the community was overwhelmingly negative. Many players rejected the offer outright on social media. One user remarked, “Wow. Still not spending $100 in PokéCoins, ” while another suggested that the company appears “desperate for people to spend money.”
Accusations of greed and manipulation surfaced, with users labeling the bundle a “scam” and articulating that the price effectively asks for too much from loyal fans. One player provided a sobering comparison, stating, “I could buy two Switch games and play them for years for this price.”
Amidst the growing frustration, one trainer urged Niantic to better engage with its player community, emphasizing that “$100? And that’ll be USD too… This only fuels the accusations of greed surrounding your constant ticketing and microtransactions. Why not offer a reasonable deal for everyday players instead?”
As these sentiments echo across social media, Niantic has yet to respond to the escalating backlash and concerns regarding the newly advertised bundle.
