Pokémon Go: Type Guide – Strengths, Weaknesses, Resistances and Vulnerabilities

Pokémon Go battles aren’t just about frantically clicking on your screen. Discover the interactions between types to gain the advantage in any situation.

Types are crucial in determining the outcome of battles throughout the Pokémon universe, and Pokémon Go is no exception to this norm.

To triumph over your enemies, whether they are Raid Bosses, members of Team Go Rocket, or even other competitors, it is essential to master the dynamics between the 18 types present in Pokémon Go.

If your memory fails you, our type diagrams are fortunately at your disposal to give you a continuous advantage over your opponents.

First of all, here is a little glossary that will be useful for you to understand what it is about.

  • Strong against: Against which type of Pokémon a Type X attack is very effective against
    • Ex: A Grass type attack is strong against the Water type
  • Weak against: Against which type of Pokémon a Type X attack is not very effective
    • Ex: A Water type attack is weak against the Plant type
  • Resistant to: What type of attacks will Type X receive reduced damage against?
    • Ex: The Grass type is resistant to Water type attacks
  • Vulnerable to: What type of attacks will Type X receive increased damage against?
    • Ex: Water type is vulnerable to Plant type

Note that there is no immunity in Pokémon Go like in other games in the license. So if normally Ghost-type Pokémon do not fear any Normal-type attacks, this is not the case in Pokémon Go.

Efficiency multiplier

The advantages of types are certainly essential to learn by heart, but it is still necessary to understand the double weaknesses and double resistances that it is possible to encounter.

So in Pokémon Go, the damage multipliers are as follows:

  • Very effective against two types (double weakness): x 2.56
  • Very effective: x 1.6
  • Not very effective: x 0.625
  • Not very effective against two types (double resistance): x 0.391
Type table in Pokémon Go

In Pokémon Go, unlike regular Pokémon games where certain types are completely immune to attacks of a specific type (such as the Flying-type which is immune to Ground-type attacks), no Pokémon type is completely immune. So all attacks of any type can cause damage to all Pokémon.

Additionally, in Pokémon Go, effective attacks only increase damage by 1.6x (or 2.56x if double weak), while in other Pokémon games, these attacks can increase damage by 2x (or 4x in case of double weakness).

In a sense, we can therefore consider that types have less importance in Pokémon Go than in classic games. However, the bonuses provided by having a type advantage are considerable, and remain one of the priorities in strategic combat.

These differences in damage and reduction multipliers make Pokémon Go a unique experience and require an adaptation of your battle strategy compared to classic Pokémon games.

The best type in Pokémon Go

Not all types are equal in Pokémon, and Pokémon Go will certainly not be an exception to the rule. While all types can find their place in combat, some are much more versatile than others.

In Pokémon Go, the Dragon type is often considered the best of all. With 3 weaknesses in fairly unusual types (Fairy, Ice, Dragon), excellent resistances (Water, Electric, Fire, Grass), and a plethora of overpowered Pokémon (Dracolossus, Drattak, Dialga…), Dragons are at the top of the game. the food chain.

We can also mention the Fighting type, which has formidable Pokémon like Lucario, Terrakium and Bétochef. These Pokémon often have exceptional offensive power, and their attacks are very effective against many popular types. Fighting-type Pokémon are exceptional in PvE, and are often an effective choice against Team Go Rocket bosses.

The best type combinations in Pokémon Go

You will have understood, not all types are equal. For example, the Ice type is known to be quite weak since it only offers one resistance (Ice) for 4 vulnerabilities (Steel, Combat, Fire and Rock).

With dual-types, things get even more complicated! Indeed, certain Pokémon combine several types that go together perfectly, resulting in a wide offensive range and numerous resistances with very few weaknesses.

Other Pokémon, on the contrary, have a very unfavorable type combination, resulting in numerous weaknesses and even double weaknesses, for the benefit of few resistances.

Here are 10 particularly powerful type combinations in Pokémon Go:
