Pokemon Scarlet & Violet allows players to choose from three different paths in any order they desire. However, there is an ideal progression based on level scaling. Here is the recommended journey for players in the latest installment by Game Freak.
The classic Pokemon games were once known for their simple progression from gym to gym, with the occasional battle or event to add excitement. However, Scarlet & Violet now provides players with a plethora of paths to choose from and the liberty to explore and engage in various activities.
Given the presence of three main plotlines and numerous obstacles in between, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. Therefore, we have created a suggested path to effectively navigate through the story.

Here is the correct order to play through Pokemon Scarlet & Violet according to levels.
Bug Gym Leader Katy – Cortondo
The initial destination for trainers embarking on their journey through Paldea is Cortondo, where they will encounter the Bug-type Gym Leader Katy. Due to the low level of the Gym and the numerous weaknesses of Bug-type Pokémon, it is considered to be relatively easy to defeat.
The team belonging to Katy:
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Nymph | Bug | 14 |
Tarountula | Bug | 14 |
Teddiursa | Bug (Tera-type) | 15 |
Klawf Titan – South Province (Area Three)
Following that is Klawf, the Crab Titan Pokemon, which serves as an introduction to the mechanics of Titan battles that will be prevalent throughout the rest of the story. As with previous low-level encounters, there is not much to take note of.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Klawf | Rock | 16 |
3. Grass Gym Leader Brassius and his Pokemon Artazon
The Gym Leader of Artazon is just another one that exposes their Pokemon to a multitude of weaknesses. Furthermore, it doesn’t improve the situation that Brassius’ Pokemon are only slightly higher in level compared to the previous Gym.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Petyl | Grass | 16 |
Smoliv | Grass / Normal | 16 |
Sudowoodo | Grass (Tera-type) | 17 |
Bombirdier Titan in West Province (Area One)
Bombirdier becomes a challenging battleground if players neglect to consider their Pokemon’s levels and type matchups. It can also be encountered early on if players stray from the main path.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Bombirdier | Flying / Dark | 19 |
Team Star Leader Giacomo – West Province (Area One)
As players make their way from the Bombirdier Titan to Cascarrafa, they will come across Team Star’s lowest-level camp. This camp is governed by the Dark-type leader Giacomo and serves as an introduction to Team Star’s preferred battle tactics.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Pawniard | Dark | 21 |
Revavaroom | Dark | 20 |
Electric Gym Leader Iono – Levincia
The next Gym Leader on the list for Pokemon Scarlet & Violet is Iono, a high-energy streamer who also doubles as a Gym Leader. Although the levels of her Electric-type Pokemon may not match her boundless energy, their type advantages can leave unprepared trainers regretting their decision to challenge her on her Livestream.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Wattrel | Electric / Flying | 23 |
Luxio | Electric | 23 |
Bellibolt | Electric | 23 |
Mismagius | Electric (Tera-type) | 24 |
Team Star Leader Mela – East Province (Area One)
Team Star’s leader for Fire-types, Mela, is a trainer who is vulnerable to type disadvantages. Despite her high levels, using Water-type attacks is an effective strategy against her.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Torcoal | Fire | 27 |
Revavroom | Fire | 26 |
8. Orthworm Titan – East Province (Area Three)
This encounter with Titan may not be very impressive, depending on the starter you choose. Even a weak Fuecoco evolution can defeat Orthworm easily due to its vulnerability to Fire-type attacks. However, defeating it will still reward players with an upgrade for their Legendary bike.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Orthworm | Steel | 28 |
Water Gym Leader Kofu – Cascarrafa
Cascarrafa’s Water-type Gym Leader can be a formidable opponent for trainers who are not properly prepared for the battle. While Veluza alone can be challenging, Kofu’s strongest Pokemon, Crabominable, is a force to be reckoned with, especially when utilizing its Tera-type transformation.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Come on | Water / Psychic | 29 |
Wugtrio | Water | 29 |
Crabominable | Water (Tera-type) | 30 |
10. Team Star Leader Atticus – Tagtree Thicket
Atticus poses a significant challenge thanks to his skill in inflicting the Poisoned status condition. This status can gradually drain a Pokemon’s health if the battle drags on, making it important for players to prepare for his Poison-type strategy.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Skuntank | Poison / Dark | 32 |
Muk | Poison | 32 |
Revavroom | Steel/Poison | 33 |
Revavroom | Poison | 32 |
Normal Gym Leader Larry – Medalist
Medali’s Gym Leader, Larry, may seem unassuming, but he is a formidable Normal-type trainer. Be sure to leave your Ghost-type Pokémon at home and stock up on Fighting-type moves for this battle. Despite the strength of his Pokémon, Larry can be easily defeated.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Komala | Normal | 35 |
Dudunsparce | Normal | 35 |
Staraptor | Normal (Tera-type) | 36 |
Ghost Gym Leader Rhymes – Montenevera
Trainers will need to journey deep into Glaseado Mountain and reach the town of Montenevera for their next Gym challenge. There, Ryme awaits to test trainers with her powerful Pokemon and lyrical skills. Fortunately, Paldea is home to a variety of Ghost-type Pokemon, both old and new, that can provide assistance and level the playing field.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Mimikyu | Ghost / Fairy | 41 |
Banette | Ghost | 41 |
Houndstone | Ghost | 41 |
Toxtricity (Low Key Form) | Ghost (Tera-type) | 42 |
Future/Past Donphan Titan – Asado Desert
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Iron Treads | Ground / Steel | 44 |
Great Tusk | Ground / Fighting | 44 |
Tulips is a more difficult Gym Leader to beat in Scarlet & Violet, so be sure to battle her in the order we’ve listed.
Psychic Gym Leader Tulip – Alfornada
Although Alfornada is a town that can be easily accessed in the early stages of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, it is advised to wait until later in your playthrough before challenging Tulip. Her Psychic-type Pokemon are formidable opponents and can be challenging to defeat, even with a strong team at high levels.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Farigirag | Normal / Psychic | 44 |
Gardevoir | Psychic / Fairy | 44 |
Espathra | Psychic | 44 |
Florges | Psychic (Tera-type) | 45 |
15. Ice Gym Leader Grusha – Frosted
Once more, players will be required to journey up Glaseado Mountain in order to challenge the ultimate Gym Leader, Grusha. As the final obstacle before facing the Elite Four, it is fitting for Grusha to specialize in powerful Ice-type Pokemon.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Frosmoth | Ice/Bug | 47 |
Beartic | Ice | 47 |
Cetitan | Ice | 47 |
Altars | Ice (Tera-type) | 48 |
Team Star Leader Ortega – North Province (Area Three)
As the snow melts away in the distant northern areas of Paldea, players will come across the encampment of Ortega, the Fairy-type leader of Team Star. While not the toughest opponent, his team of level 50+ Pokemon should not be underestimated.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Azumarill | Water/Fairy | 50 |
Wigglytuff | Normal/Fairy | 50 |
Dachsbun | Fairy | 51 |
Revavaroom | Fairy | 50 |
17. Dondozo & Tatsugiri Titans – Casseroya Lake
The powerful partnership of Dondozo and Tatsugiri serves as the ultimate test for all three main paths in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, and marks the end of the Path of Legends. It is only fitting that such a formidable battle rewards the trainer with the ultimate Legendary bike upgrade.
Pokemon | Type | Level |
---|---|---|
Dose | Water | 55 |
Tatsugiri | Dragon / Water | 55 |
Team Star Leader Eri – North Province (Area One)
Eri acts as the final barrier between the trainer and the end-game content. Defeating this formidable Team Star Leader and their team of Fighting-type Pokemon is a daunting task, especially after enduring the challenges leading up to the final battle. It is a fitting showdown to bring an end to Team Star’s reign.
