Pokimane Highlights Major Issue Between Beast Games and Squid Game

In a recent discussion, popular Twitch streamer Pokimane expressed her concerns regarding MrBeast’s new competition show, Beast Games. She described the series as being excessively “depressing,”claiming it often results in the unjust elimination of innocent players.

Pokimane, who boasts an impressive following of 9.3 million on Twitch where she primarily streams games like Valorant and Fortnite, also co-hosts the ‘Sweet n’ Sour’ podcast alongside fellow content creator LilyPichu. In a particular episode aired on January 18, she articulated her discomfort with the show’s format.

Beast Games premiered on Prime Video on December 19 and features a staggering 1,000 contestants competing for a whopping $5 million prize. The show is structured around a series of challenging tasks aimed at testing both mental and physical endurance. However, Pokimane pointed out a key issue: some players were eliminated when their teammates accepted bribes—decisions that negatively impacted the entire group.

Pokimane isn’t the biggest fan of how ‘depressed’ Beast Games made her feel.

“It’s a lot of people just being bribed to eliminate, like, their entire group of let’s say, 10 to 50, to 100 people. Like oh, I’ll give you $50K, but then all these people are eliminated — that’s one version,” Pokimane shared. She further elaborated, “And then another one is also a massive group of people, again, being punished for the mistake of one. To me, that’s not super enjoyable to watch. Also, it is freaking depressing to watch over and over again, contestants, being eliminated and going, ‘I really needed this for my family.’”

Pokimane’s Take: Comparing Beast Games to Squid Game

Diving deeper into her critique, Pokimane drew parallels between Beast Games and the popular series, Squid Game. She noted that while Squid Game also features contestants facing dire challenges, its scripted nature provides a level of emotional distance that Beast Games lacks.

“Squid Game is one thing! It’s fiction; it was written, it’s all good. Even if you get sad, however you feel, those aren’t real people! Beast Games, bro, I really do feel for the contestants,” she explained. The Twitch star highlighted a particularly alarming aspect of Beast Games, where group tasks forced participants to eliminate a fellow contestant without any wrongdoing on their part.

Despite Pokimane’s reservations, it is noteworthy that Beast Games has achieved remarkable success as Prime Video’s most-watched unscripted series, amassing over 50 million viewers. The competition has four episodes remaining, culminating in the announcement of the grand prize winner on February 13.
