In the recently aired Season 2, Episode 5 of Severance, fans witnessed a brief yet impactful appearance by Gemma, also known as Ms. Casey. Speculation is rife about her potential involvement in the upcoming episodes, particularly in light of Episode 9’s ominous title.
The central enigma of Severance revolves around the fate of Mark’s wife, Gemma. Initially presumed dead in a tragic car accident, it is subsequently unveiled in Season 1 that she has taken on the role of Ms. Casey, the wellness counselor for the severed floor employees. Since her last appearance being sent down the Exports Hall, her presence in Season 2 has been sparse, leading viewers to ponder her current status. Both Mark and the audience are left with the understanding that Mark is delving into a case file named Cold Harbor, which is intricately linked to her.
Fans are left wondering if we will finally see her reappear this season. Episode 9’s title might just provide a vital clue.
Episode 9: A Nostalgic Nod to The Twilight Zone
The forthcoming Episode 9 is intriguingly titled ‘The After Hours’, echoing the name of a chilling episode from the classic series The Twilight Zone. In this eerie episode, viewers follow Marsha White, a seemingly ordinary woman on a quest for a gold thimble for her mother at a department store. Upon reaching the ninth floor, she is confronted with an unsettling, deserted space featuring a solitary saleswoman and a lone thimble.
As the plot unfolds, Marsha’s experience grows increasingly uncanny. After noticing a scratch on the thimble, she is directed to the complaints department only to be informed that the ninth floor doesn’t exist. Without a receipt, she finds herself unable to return the item. A series of bizarre encounters leads her to discover that the saleswoman is merely a mannequin and that she has unintentionally locked herself inside the store for the night. In a shocking revelation, it is uncovered that the ninth floor is inhabited by animated mannequins, shifting between living among humans and their true, lifeless forms.

This eerie narrative might serve as a foreboding hint regarding Gemma’s fate. Could it be that she is trapped in a cycle of memory loss each time she returns to the testing floor?
One viewer postulated, “If the twist mirrors the original, it could imply that Ms. Casey was initially an Innie who later became Gemma, completely forgetting her previous identity.” Another speculated further, expressing hopes for a twist that would tie together various plot points, explaining the couple’s inability to have children and Mark’s unique role.
This theory gained traction among fans, with comments praising the connection to the themes of identity and consciousness transition, reminiscent of how Lumon operates.“Great observation, truly one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes. It aligns perfectly with the prevalent theories regarding 3D avatar printing for consciousness transitions, ” remarked another user.
