After months of anticipation, Sony has officially unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro, culminating its Technical Presentation with a significant price announcement.
The PS5 Pro aims to be Sony’s most advanced console to date. This next-gen system is designed to enhance Fidelity and Performance modes, potentially merging them into one seamless experience. Key upgrades include an advanced GPU, improved Ray-Tracing capabilities, and an AI upscaler that enhances image quality without sacrificing frame rate performance.
The announcement of the PlayStation 5 Pro took place during a Technical Presentation led by Mark Cerny, streamed on the official PlayStation YouTube channel. The console’s features were highlighted, alongside a November 7 release date and pre-orders commencing on September 26.
In addition to the features, Sony disclosed the pricing for the new console: $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY. Notably, this price is for the digital edition, and a separate purchase of a disc drive will be required for users wishing to play physical media.
While fans speculated that the PS5 Pro would come at a higher price than the current models, this figure presents a considerable investment for an upgrade. Buyers should factor in this cost, particularly if they intend to utilize the disc drive for any retro games they already own.
Sony’s year has been a mix of highs and lows, highlighted by the success of Astro Bot and the rapid decline of Concord. The reaction of fans to the unexpectedly high retail price of the PS5 Pro remains uncertain, especially considering the challenges many faced during the tumultuous launch of the original PS5 in 2020.
