According to Yellowstone fans, the 1883 version of the Dutton family is more favored than the present-day ranchers when considering the scattered members of the family across time.
As the Yellowstone timeline has progressed, we have been introduced to both new and familiar Dutton family members. John Dutton’s present-day family is seen flying helicopters around their Montana ranch, but we also learn about James Dutton, who led his family in a wagon across the Old West in pursuit of a better life.
Despite the clear differences between the two branches of the Dutton family tree, it is evident that fans have a clear favorite. In Taylor Sheridan’s TV universe, viewers strongly support the 1883 Duttons as the better group without any doubt.
Despite the modern Duttons’ busy schedule of causing destruction and engaging in shady tactics to defend their land from developers, the 1883 Duttons are solely focused on survival. The unforgiving and perilous terrain of the West shows no mercy, but James and his loved ones persevere as best they can.
According to a Reddit user, the prequels present the family in a very positive light. They are portrayed as being morally upright, diligent, and prioritizing family above all else.
Ever since I began watching Yellowstone, I have been taken aback by the Dutton family’s divisive, despondent, entitled, and conniving behavior. My initially fond feelings towards them have been disrupted by the show. They are portrayed as anti-heroes, or perhaps even outright villains. What could have possibly caused such a drastic change in this once beloved family?
The contrast between the two generations of Duttons has been observed by other fans. It can be agreed that James Dutton is the ideal father, with his loving, practical, and courageous nature. However, John Dutton is a different story… It’s safe to say that his children’s resentment towards each other can be attributed to him.
Another user suggested that the next prequel installment may provide clarity on what went wrong. They mentioned hearing about a possible 1944 sequel and wondered how many more prequels will be made before the downfall of family morals is fully understood.
“One individual confessed, ‘I too experienced the same reaction. I began with 1883, was unaware of Yellowstone, and proceeded to watch it in chronological order. Despite the abrupt shift to the modern Duttons, it becomes evident that certain values still endure.’”
Another speculated that the events that occurred in the later season of 1923 and the years that followed, leading up to Yellowstone, were likely traumatic and justified the group’s unyielding determination to protect what belonged to them.
Despite the presence of the second prequel series, 1923, this change only adds to the complexity. Even as the Duttons of the Great Depression continue to endure struggles, the reasoning behind the behavior of John Dutton and his companions remains unclear.
With the release of Yellowstone 1944, we may finally have the opportunity to see the family’s morals deteriorate completely.
